being a recent Mac user what I can say is :

Pros
- Mac is so easy to use for music (I have connected my fire wire sound card without any driver installation, ditto for the keyboard, while it has always been apita to have it work properly with PC)
- Fast and ergonomic
- no system crash

cons
file compatibly while you exchange documents with PC users

but I have to agree with Colin the elitist approach by most of the mac user is not very cool :D

No elitist attitude here.......... but it's an iMac for me. Although I do also have XP installed on my Mac as there are some instances when I have to use a Windows based product. But for me, the iMac just works much better and is more reliable. It's similar to comparing an EBMM JP trem to a Floyd Rose trem -- for me, the JP is just a much better design and a far superior product.

The "point" is that one is getting a premium operating system.

If one compares hardware specs only, Macs will almost always be more expensive. Apple's processors, chipsets, memory, graphics, etc. are standardized, off-the-shelf components for the most part. What one is paying for is the OS.

I apologize for being argumentative, but I have to respectfully disagree. Apple has a superior operating system - no argument. However, they are forcing you to buy THEIR hardware to run it and forcing you to pay a premium for it - even if it's the same hardware that the rest of the world uses. That's equivalent to selling two guitars with the exact same specs, and charging a premium for one simply because it comes with better strings. If Apple would allow me to buy the MacOS and load it on my homebuilt PCs, then I'd be in your camp...

Dunno how you can call an OS "premium" or "superior". It's different and some people like it. Some people don't.

I agree that the price isn't necessarily justified simply because of the hardware, I do agree it's justified because of the ease of use, especially regarding accessories and software. I can go buy a digital camera or camcorder off the shelf, plug it into my Mac and it just plain works. The same for printers.

Besides, you're paying a premium price for a premium computer. Compare a MacBook Pro to an Alienware, not a Dell or HP. You'll find very quickly that the "Premium" PC is much more expensive than the Mac.

Yea, but your home built PC won't be as purty as a MAC...............;):D

That's true, but I can build a computer that smokes an Alienware for less than a Mac.

Even though I'm a mac guy, I have to disagree with that one :D There are some pretty cool homebuilt PC's with killer casemods out there :D

+1.

And again though it isn't legal, and does require choosing particular pieces of hardware, ProjectOSX86 makes it possible to run the Mac OS on a PC.

I totally agree! If it weren't for my need of Logic Pro, I'd have already done that myself.

I'm one of those morons who tries to run Pro Tools on a PC. Thankfully over the last month they've really decided to add much more support for Windows. It does suck to have the power to run something but not have the OS supported well.

Funny. I remember when Logic was PC Only. I've been using it since then and made my switch when Apple acquired Emagic.

Hehe...I'm going to continue to make sure this conversation stays friendly. :)

I do agree that PC prices vary greatly - but on average if you compare Apples to non-Apples :)p), I think you'll find that on average, Apple really is charging quite a bit more for their hardware than even the better PC builders.

I also disagree on the purdy part Frank - I have built some pretty cool looking PCs - and I have many more options and add-ons available to me than you do. :p

I agree we should keep this friendly. :D The thread will likely get out of hand unless we all keep an open mind. Just like the rest of the internet does about this subject.

I said this a couple of pages ago. This could of got out of hand as people are as passionate about their computer manufactures as they are with their guitars.

So far everyone has been well behaved. There has been a bit of jabbing but all in good fun.

We are a good enough group of artists to keep this level headed.

Urban Legend

Bill Gates is famous for giving the world an ‘easy to use’ computer interface programs from his mega company Microsoft. For anyone who has ever lost a long report or even just a few important lines of an email you know this ‘easy to use’ programming is breakable, hack-able, and certainly buggy. It’s enough to make you wonder about Mr. Gates, and it appears at least a few have since his name has been vilified to the upmost point. The Urban Legend is that Bill Gates is Satan himself. Now this rumor has run the course with those folks who spend their time sitting at their computer. It involves a formula which alleged proves the master of Microsoft is actually the Prince of Doom. They’ve gone all the way down the nuts and bolts of programming—ASCII code otherwise known as American Standard Code for Information Interchange to crack Gate’s own programming and came up with an interesting figure. Looking at the former Microsoft head guy’s full name they noted that Bill is the third of this family using the same moniker making him Bill Gates the third or III. Converting Bill Gates III into ASCII and then adding up all the numbers, they got the infamous number of the beast—666. Coincidence? How is Windows 7 working out for you?
