Dave is right. I have had Ashdown since the company started. Basically I used to work in Essex where the old Trace factory and HQ used to be, so used Trace before what ever made the company split/sell up to Gibbo happened.
Then Ashdown located to North Essex and started production. I still used one of their first amps AMB 500 (a combo with 2x10) and she still kicks out big time with the SR5.
According to a friend of mine the latest Trace stuff is on a par with the old stuff before the company was taken over. So worth a look.
But if you are looking for this so called Brit sound head to Ashdown would be my recommendation. Lets face it Pino and Mr Entwistle cannot be that wrong.
:)

Well, Entwistle, (R.I.P.) used sunn s/s amps for years...with stacks of tens...he could of been using svt's, but he was one of the best, despite his lack of judgement....

Really? Ampeg is what all your "boutique" amp manufactures are modeled on.

Well, some of them are, sure. And why not, as they do have a very special sound and are generally well built.

You know DeTomaso Pantera? Based on a Ford engine, sure, but comparable to a Ford? No!

To compare Ampeg (reliable, good sounding and sound construction) to Italian sports cars (unreliable, waay expensive, great to drive but unsuited to almost all kinds of everyday use, except pulling up to a country club or impress stupid neighbours) is to me really far off.

Actually, what I meant was that Ampeg is like a sgood tandard kind of amp, just as I *think* the beforementioned cars are. For myself I'd have written SAAB and Volvo, but you guys have a very different opinion on those brands than we have.

I like the newer Sabb and Volvo. We were just wondering when they would catch up to the 20th century in styling! Pantera...yup cool cars....you can still order them today from Gary Hall...called the "Hall Pantera".

I'd rather own the "original" then some nock off of it..even if that amp is percieved as "Ferrarish" in nature.

Ampeg makes some great gear but it's just one flavor out of many out there. If all you like is vanilla, good for you, but some of us prefer something else. Hell, just a couple weeks ago you were RicPlayer and now all of a sudden you're Jo Jo the Sting Ray Play'n Pervert Clown. Obviously things can change and in a month when you're playing GK or something else "Ampeg inspired" I'm not gonna diss you for that.

the slightly annoyed,

Very Scandinavian of you my friend ... but maybe you're right. Perhaps Rolls and Bentley might have been more appropriate ... As for everyday vehicles, personally I prefer my BMW 5 .. and I can get a full Trace combo on the back seat anf stack in the boot. My S-70 was nice, but lacked balls. Never tried a Saab.

Ok, so now it's hijacking time:D
I have a 1977 BMW 633 that I use when I think I'm Michael Caine, and a Chrysler Voyager I can load all my stuff into.

The BMW 5 series is nice, especially the 540. Don't really appreciate the M5, as I am frankly an average driver.

SAAB is a weird kind of car, Volvo is just plain boring. Good both of them, but...

I don't personally like the kind of tone I get when playing through a SVT/810, but I can really appreciate the sounds some other cats get out of it.
I'm just more of a solid state guy, and the few ventures into tubedom (which is where Ampeg excels, I think) have failed miserably. The only tube amp I was really happy with was the Aggie DB680, but that system just became too expensive.
The amp I'm currently using is, to me, way better sounding than an SVT, but then it's a totally different kind of sound.
Also, at my age protability is an issue, and I can carry my bass on my back, my amp over my shoulder and one box in each hand.

Strummer, I absoultly know where you are comming from!!!! I have changed positions on tubes more than a call girl on a Saturday night!! Solid state = better bass control...tubes = more richness in tone....IMO.

I remember reading an interview with the bass player for ska band The Specials, and he wanted "A big, grey box with a button labelled "loud" on it."

I think that's what I'd like too, as I don't use the tone controls.

Btw, you played with Huey Lewis? When he was famous?

Oh the pain of it all...he started in the late 70's, became localy (Marin County) famous in early eighties...we opened for him then....used his rehersal space some years later in Terra Linda...he was THE BAND< IMO of the 80's....yes there were so many others...but his radio airplay was constant for years. We also did a bennifit with him at Uncle Charlies, where he really got his start.

I was with my same band Person2Person at the time.

Yes dude he might have for years but look at his equipment list in the final years - from about 1999 onwards - he used Trace and then Ashdown kit.....that last gig at the Albert Hall has heaps of Ashdown stuff behind him......

He saw the light.

...Other than Mark King (Level 42) and Doug Wimbush, did anyone else well known use TE?

Stu Hamm was using a Trace rig when I saw him playing bass for Steve Vai. This was around '92 or '93 I believe.

I have a Trace AH600 head with the black light that I've been thinking about putting on the auction block. Maybe I'll put a feeler out here and on Talkbass.

1. My music degree was a lot of hard work.
2. You opened up for Huey Lewis-mozaltov:rolleyes:
3. I've had some time to think about what I posted and yet I still think you are a clown.
