I was walking to pick up some strings (Slinky's, natch) at the local music store today and passed by a pawn shop. They've been known to have some decent basses from time to time. I walk in, and hanging up is a Stingray Classic. I've been dying to replace my Ray since I sold it. I look at the price tag - $695! So I pull it down and inspect. It has some gig wounds, for sure. But the neck is perfect (and the figuring is GORGEOUS), it plays and sounds awesome, and everything works as it should. They were willing to go down to $650. I didn't have enough at the moment, so I put it on layaway until I can pay it off in a week or two. Pics below. So, good deal?

And yes, I will be getting rid of the classy "69" sticker on the PG. :) Actually, I'm thinking mirror PG replacement.

While most people would say that is a steal, i can't agree... i'm not sayin that it is over priced but still the paint is pretty bad.
I do play my basses alot, live and at home but i am always carefull with my gear, and some small scratches and dings are always comming with the years. I just dont understand how some people throw their guitars around and messing the paintjob up... especially on a mm. That's why i would not buy this kind of basses, unless to do a full restore, but in many cases it's gonna come out more expensive than a mint or near mint second hand bass.
Bottom line, if you can live with the damage, then do it! (I paid about 1300$ for 2nd hand classic stingray with one small ding in it)

I can! And to get a classic Ray at this price, you have to expect some cosmetic issues. The main thing is, there is no damage that affects the playability, and the neck is PERFECT.

Hey, aren't people paying EXTRA money these days for relic'd instruments? :)

the paint issues could be reduced a bit. It is a shame to see instruments trashed, but some people don't look at them as anything but tools, and toss them around like they would a hammer or something. You'd think they would show a bit more respect to something if it cost $1500+ new.

True, that. If maple neck'd four stringers were my thing, I'd be green with envy right now. :) The "relicing" just means you won't have to worry about the paint job, which in turn means more useability for you. And less stealability (actually sellability) for potential thieves, which means you can safely turn your back on it for five seconds in a public venue. I say go for it!

Now I'm thinking about getting it fixed up and refinished. I already sent an email to Marty Bell, any other suggestions? Not sure he deals with damage like this one has.

Too be honest... when you are on stage... The chances are quite high that you are the only person in the room that has noticed those dings. Ok, the guys in the band may have noticed them but they don't, care as long as the sound is good.

To be honest I would leave it as it is and let those "scars" remind you of what a great deal you got and that hopefully makes you smile every time you take it out of the case! :)
