Did you treat the fretboard and leave some residual oil on the inlay?

No i always wipe off any excess before i re-string.

Any reply yet ? I'm wondering whether a polish of the inlay using super fine micro mesh, followed by a polish using something like guitar scratch remover, would cure it?

just use more distortion and you wont notice it...
