im sorry, please dont bash me for this blasphemy. but im seriously looking into getting a mm at the end of this summer and i was curious how big of a jump in qaulity and playability it will be from my squier p-bass. in my opinion my squier is a very verysatile machine. i can get just about any tone i want from it, with out have to touch anything on my amp. and i ripped off the tone knob, so it only has a volume. how does the mm compare to this? im pretty sure that its not my bass that allows me to get any type of sound that i want, and that its me, but how much help is a mm stingray gonna give me with that? i currently have a ba-210sp, and i can get some wicked tones out of it, hows the mm gonna do? sorry for trying to compare such two different items, but i dont want to go into a coma and not be able to play cuz i didnt have any warning about the mm. thanks.

If you think a Squier P bass is versatile then you have nothing to worry about. What you will be getting is quality through and through. Surely you've played a stingray. Right? It should be obvious that its much better then some knock off bass. These posts crack me up.

I helped a friend of mine set up his Squier Affinity P bass and was surprised at how good it was. I kept it the entire weekend and played it quite a bit.

But the step up in quality will be obvious to you. Not to denigrate the Squier bass - it IS a good bass for what it costs, and I wish that when I was growing up that we'd had such good basses for that kind of price.

With the MM bass, you'll notice that it's easier to play and will allow you to more easily grow as a player. Keep us informed - we love to hear about new basses!

I agree with everyone so far - but until you've played a "quality" instrument - you don't know what you're missing until you've experienced it for yourself.

Once you've experienced it for yourself, there's no question which is better.

Hmmmm yes, first experience with a Stingray. I remember heading down to a local guitar shop, having my heart set on a Fender American Deluxe P-Bass. I tried it out, and surprisingly, it was BLEH! The American P was better. The salesman then guided me to a Stingray. I tried it out, and BLAM!, I knew I needed one.

Sorry bout the off topic-ness, but the main point is: try it out, you won't regret it, except for the G.A.S. :D

ok, so new question. ive been shopping around for a stingray, just to kinda see how much of a dent is going to be in my wallet. for a Black 4 string stingray, maple neck, 3eq, non matching headstock, and black pickgaurd. bass central says they can give me one thats still in the box, with a case, shipped to my door, with free strings(if i order by the 20th) for $1166. chuck levins says theyd give one to me for $1038, but neglected to say anything about shipping or if its still in the box and stuff like that. what do ya'll think? i pm'd bassplyr about his stock and prices, but no word from him, yet. any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

I might also buy my first mm bass this summer!
My uncle is going to the states for 2 weeks, i will get it at the end of this summer.
I will order it from basscentral, probably a sterling pacific blueburst/maple/white pearloid and matching headstocks.

Also, i haven't tried it yet. I dont know if i will get a opportunity.
So do you think it's worth chance? Maybe i love, maybe i hate it.

I personally would risk buying an MM untried, but I've played them, know that I like them and that they're consistent.

I've also tried other brands that are consistent, that lots of people like, and I've found I don't like them.

So i'm moving from my jump-to-start kit to a sterling, i dont think i can be dissapointed, also if i dont like i can sell it, they cost a fortune here in sweden.

Well, I think you've answered your own question as to whether it is worth taking a chance.

I take it this is a bass Bass Central have in stock?

I started out with a squir pbass and moved up to a mm SUB going through a westfield, and numeorus tanglewoods. The SUB (although not an SR) does represent why you would pay up to a £1000 for a bass. Things like jack inputs dont come loose, theres no buzz, every frett is even, the actions low, the frets are smooth on each side, it itonats perfectly. Chances are a decent squire will be close to this put not quite beacase there won't some guy building it like it's his own and that might be enough for it not to intonat properly or have a pickup set up badly or jack inputs come loose. As for sound, well no offence but if you think you get all the sound you need from a squire your wrong otherwise stick with it! I say this beacase I used to think the same way. With an MM, the bottom ends punchy and thuddy and not muddy, the mid cut's thorugh and growls, the treble can hurt when turned up high enough. You cut through the mix so much more without realising it. I still have my squire as it was my first and still play it, but it does have it's limits.
