SRV Tone

Okay, so when my ball gets here, I think im going to buy an overdrive pedal. What do you think the best pedal would be to achieve that Stevie Ray Vaughan tone? I had the Boss Blues Driver pedal, but didn't like it. Would the BB Preamp do a nice job?

My amp is a JSX head and Genz Benz 2x12 cab. I need a pedal with little gain for that ultimate blues tone. Do you guys have any recommendations?

For an aproximation get a small valve amp(under 10watts)and a single coil/trem guitar and turn it way loud,Keeley modded bd-2 /TS-9 are ok and there are loads of boutique pedals that promise the world,but that tone imvho will not be found in any pedal or any gear as an end, it's in the hands,anyway go make your own sound ;P

if you got the cash, look into some of the Diamond Pedals such as the J-Drive or just get the Xotic BB, RC and AC and you will be good to go for almost any situation.

another option would be to try the Tubescreamer and the Bluesdriver together

I would say the keeley modded bd-2 combined with the middle position on your JP should sound pretty dang good...

My guitarist friend managed to get a very good SRV tone with his SSS guitar (the brand name escapes me, but I think it starts with the letter F), and a Keeley TS9dx.

Anyway, different people have different tastes, try them all out and pick the one that sounds right to your ears.

Other than the fact that your playing with:
a different guitar
made of different wood
with different pup configurations
through a different amp (fender bassman and marshall majors)
and different speakers
I don't know that one specific pedal would be the ultimate answer and that there are probably several on the market that would be useful (Stevie's thing for Hendrix also had him playing at times through Fuzz Face, Octavia and Cry Baby)

it probably still comes down to what the man said himself:

"Now I use heavy strings, tune low, play hard and floor it. Floor it....that's technical talk"

A Keeley ts 808 tubescreamer will definately get the job done. Stevie often used a fender vibratone (with a rotating speaker). You should try some different rotary pedals. Sometimes, if used correctly, they can fatten up the tone.

Get a Pod XT - download "SRV" tone patch and install.

Turn valve amp up loud so the valve spring retainers are rattling and "Bobs yer knob".

I don't think you have the ideal amp for SRV tone, I've no experiance really with the JSX but you shouldn't really need much of a pedal at all generally.

Just run the amp just into distortion, and play hard.!

Stevie didn't use a lot of distortion or high gain...He ran many amps really loud. When you run more than one amp, you get a tiny tiny tiny bit of delay. It makes it way fat...and loud. Stevies amps were tube amps cranked up to ten. When you turn a tube amp up to ten, you get natural distortion.
