Sorry to hijack this thread, as I don't know what gear Stueart Smith used for the Eagles tour. I just wanted to chime in and say that he is one of my absolute favorite guitarists. His work with Shawn Colvin and Rodney Crowell is amazing and soooo tasteful.

Years ago (1973 maybe?) I went to see Rodney Crowell perform in Boston with a friend, and we were hoping that Albert Lee might be with the band. Instead, this lanky guy with a Strat and a thumbpick goes on stage and we were (momentarily) disappointed. I mean who plays country music with a Strat and a thumpick. Well, Stueart Smith did, and he proceeded to floor us with his amazing chops. Back then, he was a bit flashier and rocked a bit harder. Now, he has taken on a more refined style, and I love both. I think he's the consumate sideman, and I wish that he'd put out a solo CD, or instructional video. He is a stunning guitarist, producer and arranger that everyone should know about.

cheers,
Dave

Big Poppa,

You're probably right about those dates. 1990+ sounds more accurate. I slipped into a time warp. What was I thinking? I couldn't (leagally) get into bars and nightclubs in 1973! At any rate, Stueart was amazing to watch, and we didn't miss Albert Lee at all. Well, maybe just a little. I believe Rodney has Vince Santoro on drums, and Hank DeVito on guitar and pedal steel. Great, great, great band.

BTW, I have seen photos of Steuart Smith with some kind of EBMM guitar. He also played a EBMM guitar with Shawn Colvin on occassion.

do a search on the forum and you should find some more info on what MM gear he uses. I'll try and find the time to watch the DVD and will let you know.

Steuart uses a number of different Music Man guitars. Currently he is using the 20th Annv Silhouette guitar.

Other guitars include a Axis Supersport, Regular Silhouette and Silhouette Special.

Not sure about his amplifier selection, but his tone is huge.

Will find out what his is using next time we talk with him.

Hi Colin,

We do take photo's on occasion.

Usually there is not a lot of time to take photos before we send. The artist(s) is on the road and cannot wait to get their hands on it. We are more likely to get a photo sent from the artist playing the instrument on stage after they have had it for a while.

Steuert Smith guitars and amps

I saw him recently with Shawn Colvin and he was using a 60's Start (maybe a '67) with EMG pickups. He had a Music Man in a stand but never used it. Had a couple of Fender Super Reverbs and maybe a Fender 2x12 closed back cabinet (Bassman, BandMaster). I saw him with the Eagles and pretty sure I saw a Peavey Classic 50 2x12 or 4x10.

Cheers.

Stephan, any relation to Steve Barr here on the list?

Steuart Smith's Gear

I realize this post is a little late (HA!) but I just watched the DVD again yesterday for the first time in ages and I have the following info to offer:

On "New Kid", SS is playing a '66 strat with EMGs. Normally he tunes this guitar to open C, but obviously not in this case. His main amp is a Peavey Classic 50 that is likely a 4x10" or 1x15". You'll also see an 18 watt Marshall 1974 (model, not year) 1x12" combo behind him, but that is actually Walsh's. As someone else mentioned, he has a slew of EBMMs, including several Axis Super Sports, dual HB-equipped Silhouette, and custom double-neck Silhouette.

No info on what if any pedals he uses, but it looks like Frey and Walsh use Boss pedals exclusively (blech!).

The main ingredient of SS's playing is the 10 vintage Steuart Smith fingers that he uses, with two vintage Steuart Smith ears on the front end.

open C tuning?

I haven't followed this thread much, but was suprised to read that Stueart plays in open C tuning. Is this his standard tuning, or just for specific applications? I suspect he uses various tunings for some of the chordal / textural stuff he does with Shawn Colvin, but didn't think it would be his primary tuning.

You can catch some of Steuart's playing with Shawn Colvin on her DVD. Some live videos are with Shawn and bassist Larry Klein. Other live videos show Steuart with Shawn's larger band, that includes another tasteful guitarist, Shawn's frequent song writer/producer and former partner, John Leventhal.

Regarding amps and pedals, I think players of Steuart's caliber can make just about any gear sound fine. Peavey gear isn't high on my list, but the Classic 30 is a well regarded amp, and with good tubes, good speakers and a few simple mods, can be a very expressive amp for short money. I haven't heard the Classic 50, but I imagine they share similarities. BOSS pedals don't have the appeal of the boutique, true bypass, geeky pedals, but they have served professional players well for years. (more Mel Bay, less ebay).

Steuart Smith never fails to impress me, and I'd love to know more about him. Does anyone has links to more information on this incredible musician?

Thanks for the thread on this great musician.

cheers,
Dave

Steuart Smith Guitars

On New Kid In Town and Peaceful Easy Feeling, he plays a 3-tone Sunburst 1961 Fender Stratocaster with a maple neck. It is his favourite and most valuable guitar.
