Question Stingray 4 HH Room for Slapping?

I am thinking of buying a Stingray 4 HH, but wanted to know does anybody have problems with double thumping and not having enough space because of the double Humbuckers? Or do the humbuckers interfere with plucking?

It may be my technique needs to change but I thought I would ask for some opinions anyway.

It's mostly your technique. This was my only reservation about a SR5HH, which offers even less room between the neck and the neck pickup.

The bass requires more finesse, and a more economic approach to slapping. All you have to do is be a little more controlled; not so crazy. You don't have to hit it like it's been bad, you know. Making your technique more efficient will also make you a cleaner, much more consistent player.

The reward for all this (it's actually not difficult at all) is the best slap tone on the planet.


All that said, you shouldn't have a problem slapping it using your current technique anyway... unless your method is really, really dirty, like mine was.

I found that I didn't have to change my slap technique at all, I still aim for the bottom of the neck and that whats I hit, great tone, try one, you will like it!

No problem. I double thumb too sometimes, so I know where you're coming from on that. Since you thumb through the string on the way down in order to get underneath it to come back up, clearance in that area can be even more of an issue. Again ... no problem for me on the SR4HH's I've had. I'll be getting another one. And as somebody else mentioned .. the HH slap tone is amazing, so ... gotta do it.

I don't know what double thumping is and my slap technique is probably the crappiest you find on the planet, but I didn't even consider the extra H when adding an occasional slap and pop in a line. And if it was interfering, l'd rather work on my technique than missing out on that phantastlc sound options offerred by the SR4HH.

Just buy an HS model. Then you'll be fine.
Even better....try them all!
I still have some problems with fast switching between finger style and plucks on the 5er HH model.
It just depends on your technique. It just doesn't fit mine right. Should have bought the HS model. (sounded just as good). But i liked the colour!
SO my next MM will be an H or HS model.

I never had a problem with either of the 4 or 5 string HH's I had. It's all techinque. I've seen people who slap with alot of flailing hand movement...to me that's rather bad technique.

Yes I know Louis does it. Love his sound, but still think the flailing is sloppy.

Richard, at least you've got the balls to have a crack at slapping live. "Le Freak" is in our set, and after experimenting for a few nights at home I'm not even going to attempt slapping that tune - I'm just going to keep it greasy and funky and hope nobody in the audience notices

Just because you don't have any problems with it, doesn't mean that I have a sloppy technique. I don't consider my technique sloppy.
But I still sometimes I have a bit of a problem with fast switching between fingerstyle and plucking like I said and I just don't want to change my technique for the sake of 1 bass.
Yes I should have thought about this more when I was at Basscentral but hey... It sounded so good.
Ill just buy a HS or H model. (maybe a bongo) I heard that the single H was the best anyway so.... win win

Same here... no problems with HH on a Bongo. In fact I might add that the problem, if it exists at all, it is not so much with slapping but with pulling and with your hand position anchor point, but believe me you'll get used to it in no time.

Did I mention I only have half of my thumb on the right hand?

The pulling is where I run into issues on my Bongo 4HH, but I may have to get used to it. I was going to get a HS, but I just got a lead on a Buttercream Bongo HH!!! Wish me luck.

Yes Mark, I've always done that one finger style. Stingray 4, roll off a bit of bass and tops and push the mids, play back near the bridge, works for a faker like me anyway.

Mark, I don't believe Le Freak is slapped - in fact I'm not aware that Bernard Edwards ever slapped. I may be wrong, but I understood he played with only 1 finger right hand and all of those great bass lines were basically fingerstyle, index finger only!
