Hey now,

I recently acquired a Stingray 4 HS. The bass functions fine in all others settings. When the bass is switched into "single coil" J bass mode (2nd click r to l) the output/volume completely drops. I understand there will be some slight dropout going into single coil mode. This dropout is as if the bass has a dead battery. If I crank my amp to 8 out of 10 (the speakers would blow in other settings) I can get a nominal bass tone.

I tried another HS at the local store and while the output did drop slightly it was still functional. Mine has no function to it. No real tone for that matter.

I'm being told by the seller that this is typical. Is this typical??

It's not typical.

I would start with the FAQ section on the MM site and make sure your setup is correct.

Ernie Ball Music Man Bass F.A.Q.

If that doesn't work, I would either have a qualified tech look at it or call customer service. I'm assuming that you bought it used. If so, it won't be covered under warranty, but if a local tech can't help you, CS may be an option.

I'd say it's not typical. My HS has a significant drop in volume for both of the one single coil only settings, but it can be corrected with adjusting the volume on the bass.

How's the difference between the single coil at the neck and the single coil at the bridge?

Hey all,

There is a major volume gap between the coil of the neck and that of the bridge. As mentioned before I assumed some slight drop off..especially going from 2 coils down to 1. This is more than slight. When you click it in that position you hear nothing. If I really dig into the strings you hear a faint sound of a bass guitar.

As far as volume. To get a decent wall rattling volume I have my amp at 3 in all other settings.(even the neck). With the bridge I have to turn it to 8.

I have heard from EB and they say the same. I called a retailer and they say the same.

So I'm sold it has an issue. :(
