Also eager to hear the 20th - forgot about that one, which is crazy, cuz it's still my favorite StingRay. Eager to hear the Ebony Edition too, when you get to that one.

I totally agree that despite subtle differences, the essence and spirit of each & all of them is consistent - especially when considering the various single H models (the HH sounds are definitely discernible). One observation/opinion about this that I've always had, though, is that the differences between them are quite a bit more pronounced when playing slap. To me, that's when the otherwise more subtle differences really come out.

Now, don't take me the wrong way - I'm not saying you "shoulda" done slap samples, or "should" do them. I know it takes time, effort, patience and persistence to do what you've done here, and in the way you've done it, which is superb. The permutations would explode if you did all possibilities, including fretless, etc...

And let me take a second to emphasize prolly the coolest thing about this set of samples - these are all basses you own ... that is a FINE collection, Oli. It's been fun watching you get them together over time.

Yeah, when I had mine, I played it quite happily for a little while before realizing that it didn't ship (from the dealer) with a battery, and that I'd been playing passive. Imagine how happy I was when I popped that sucker in.

Oh Wow...I had one for a short while and didn't realize it. I might have kept it had I known!

Probably not though...I prefer 2 pickup models. Still a very cool feature.

Me too. My plan for now is to add a new set of samples every weekend.

Interesting. I'm not much of a slapper, which is probably the reason why I think basses start to sound more alike when slapping. But I definitely would like to add samples for fretless, where in my opinion the differences in the natural sound of the wood are most pronounced.

First, it is yours that you are hearing! Second, I came across this by mistake as well. After reading Musicman Nut's http://www.ernieball.com/forums/music-man-basses/41777-warning.html thread, I took the batteries out on those I rarely play. When I started to record with the 30th, I had all forgotten about that and wondered why its output was so much lower than the others. Only after trying to tweak the EQ, I realised that it missed a battery!

In my experience, it works with all StingRays, regardless of configuration. The output is just very, very low, so you might not hear it with your normal amp settings.

Hey Oli !!! Thanks for all the samples . I wanna ask you about the stingray with a Graphite Neck . What did u think of the status neck ? How is its overall feel ? Did you like it ??

I'm planning to make my own custom Bass and was Planning to use a Status Graphite Music Man replacement 5 string neck and bolting it on to a Swamp ash body . Thats why I'm asking .

Neutral: The dimensions and curves are very similar to a standard StingRay neck (but not identical) and it feels reasonably close. The fretwork is good but fret size is smaller with a larger fretboard radius. It plays well with low to very low action.

Frankly? I hate it. Otherwise the NAMM 'Ray would possibly have become my go-to bass. Similar story with the 30th Anniversary 'Ray. I absolutely don't like gloss finished necks. My '88 fretless with its worn in neck feels ok but I still prefer the oil & wax finish. Which is also the reason for not ordering a Classic 'Ray.

So would you recommend that neck for building a custom music-man style bass ???

for a custom bass i guess it will work, but if you want a musicman why not get the original?

I really like the stability of Graphite . I live in India and here the weather changes like crazy . I'm sick and tired of my guitars warping and twisting all the time . I'm not dissing the Music-Man basses . They are great and I really like them . WOuld recommend them to everyone . Just to give u and example , here Ernie Ball strings get some rust in 2 weeks . Thats how bad the humidity is here . Many people here have Warwicks and I think Ovangkol necks are the only ones I've seen not really affected by the humidity .

If I make a custom music man style bass that comes to $ 1350 . I save some money and also I get what I want .
