Well, they compared it to other basses of the same vintage and pickup configuration, plugged it into a bunch of different bass amps, replaced the preamp, sacrificed stuff, etc. So the good news is that it's got a new preamp, and everything on it checks out ok. The

Bad news, if you can call it that, is that the electronics on that version of the HS with the stacked single and everything apparently will have some hum on most positions due to how the in-phase and out of phase stuff works with the pickups and preamp design. It should be on it's way back to me tomorrow, so I should have it late next week.

Since technically they didn't fix a problem, they didn't charge me for anything but shipping, and even threw in a free T-shirt. Now that is what I call a standup company. My next bass will be another EBMM. Question is, what exactly will it be. Another SR5? Bongo 5? Reflex? I'm thinking SR5 with Alnico pickups, rosewood fretboard, maybe another HS, or maybe an HH or H.

They changed the preamp and did not charge you for it? If due to the PU and preamp config it should be a bit noisy, why did they replaced it?

They thought maybe it would help make it quieter, but the end result seems to have been the same. They said this is probably one of the reasons they went away from the stacked single coil to the phantom pickup that they use now.

I think It'll be an Alnico SR5, rosewood fretboard, either Pearl Blue, or Pacific Blueburst. Once I get the SR5 Back I'll head down to Edison NJ and see what kind of SR5's they have.

I thought that they went phantom long time ago. Maybe that's why my oldie is noisy with single coil to.But I guess a bad wiring and my love to overload the sound with Highs affects it to.
If I'd change my SR, I'd get trans blue one.

Well, the SR5 Single H had the phantom coil under the pickup. For the versions with multiple pickups though, they don't have the phantom coil under the bridge pickup, but elsewhere. The HH versions don't have any phantom coil or pickups. The 2007 SR5 HS that I have, has a stacked single coil, and the bridge humbucker. There is no phantom pickup, as it were, just one of the coils of the Stacked single.

Since then, they have moved not to a phantom coil, but to an actual phantom pickup mounted underneath the pickguard, at least on the Stingray 5. They use other methods on the HS versions of the Bongo an Sterling. I'm not sure what they do for the Reflex SSH version, or whether they just deal with the hum.

Well, it's ALMOST back to me. Unfortunately UPS has been not picking up nor delivering for the past three days in most of NJ due to hurricane Sandy damage. So, the bass, which was supposed to be delivered Yesterday, is still with them. I hope it gets here without any more issues.

Ok, as of today, it is still in Secaucus, so it hasn't even made it to the delivery hub yet. It's worth waiting for, but it is nerve wracking wondering if it's secure in the UPS location.

Sounds the same. Has some minor hum, though nothing close to the level of the J pickup on my G&L SB-2. I'm just glad there is nothing wrong with the bass. It has such a beautiful feel and sound, so a little hum I can deal with. It's worlds better than most unshielded single coils. I can't wait to get my second SR5.

First though gotta wait for this whole gasoline shortage thing in NJ to be gone. Everyone is now hording gas so it's impossible for stations to keep gas available.

It is good to hear. Maybe you could make some recording when you will have spare time. And I will be able to compare your noise with my in that case)
