Just to add one dissenting voice..... ( I am a longtime Fender player who has been spending much of his recent time on an older Rickenbacker although I still do love my Stingray.)
Play what you feel comfortable with and get a variety of basses. Be that a Stingray or a Pbass or a Bongo or whatever... I have not found one bass that does everything. I love the way different basses feel and play and sound unique.
I like many basses.
Ernie Ball do have amazing build quality and are more consistant than the others , their customer service is second to none. It would be a good place to start or a good place to wind up.
