This is a scientific break through!
The lab at SSTRI (Scientific Strap Technology research Institute) announced today that there are three basic strap lengths, ans quite surprisingly all three are named form ppl we know and love:D

The short starp is called "Jack". The purpose if this height seems to be that the fingers of the left hand are close to the brain, as described by Mr Bovine himself.

The medium strap is called "Sterling". The main purpose of this strap length is, again according to the person lending his name, is that navel lint can be conviniently removed without moving the bass. Mr ball also claims this strap pength is comfy.

The long strap is called "Mark". The main purpose it of course that it looks damn cool to have the bass down by your knees, and as Mark put it: Monkey arms makes it real easy too.

Any strap lenght in between those are simply "transitional", or so the SSTRI tells it.

That's it, I just thought I'd share:)

That's crazy. I didn't even know the SSTRI existed. They don't even have a website, that's how cool they are. :D

I have evidence that my strap is getting longer:

But my arms aren't long enough for Aussie Mark Length.

Since only senior members seem to be chiming in here, how about the perspective of a forum newbie (note the post count)......

I have always played at the same strap length as our fearless moderator in the picture above. I'm a tall guy and my arms are long enough but I just don't get how anyone plays with any semblance of technique down around their knees. Sure it looks cool and the arms are comfortable but it adds a lot of work to the hands. Maybe if I was to reduce all my music to I-IV-V I could pull it off.

Chicks dig a guy with bigger shirts.

Maybe if I was to reduce all my music to I-IV-V I could pull it off.

I've done that and still can't lower the thing to my kneecaps.

BTW, welcome, Chris.

There is more than I IV V? Dang you hang out here long enough you are bound to learn something. :D

Any where I can play while keeping my left wrist straight is going to be where I strap one.

I am clearly in the Sterling/Modified-Jack zone.

I've tried 'em at different lengths - just to see what it was like.

Way down low and "bass in the same position as when your sitting down" high...

Not for me. Not an issue for others, just not for me.

Oh, and Welcome Mr. Echo...

I suffer from “Dunlop disease”, I’m so fat my belly done lopped over my belt, if I hang my bass too low I can’t see it… I’ve been thinking of working out some sort of Velcro arrangement, but I’ll have to find a fuzzy shirt first.
