I havent read this whole thread, but I've taken on around half a dozen or so students in the last few months that have taken to guitar via guitar hero. That's around an extra £300 smackers for me a month. Personally, I think guitar hero rawks as far as what it's doing for guitar music and rock music amongst todays youth.

Course, then i have to point out that they probably won't be playing those Eric Johnson licks anytime soon.

My son has played drums for the last 4 years in elementary and middle school. He's also a video game junkie. After playing Guitar Hero and RockBand for the last 2 years he's now interested in playing guitar.

His mom bought him a starter guitar and he started lessons in September. He loves it! I just bought a NOS Sub from Fing to give him for Christmas.

He now plays drums and guitar. As he continues to improve we'll move up the line from the Sub.

He loves my JP, but I'll think he'll love the Sub too.

I'm really glad he's moving in the direction he is and I have no problem thanking the computer games. He's watched me play for years but never really took an interest in it until then.

I think another effect of the video games is that it exposes kids to great songs that their dad's love. I was playing away at a music store the other day and a 12-13 year old comes up and asks if I know "Walk this way" by Aerosmith. I start playing it. He then asks if I know any Kiss. Well, I don't, but certainly both of these bands were in their prime long before he was born. I'm glad that kids are learning about Aerosmith and Guns n' Roses and all the bands from "my generation".



It is also true that video game and real world experiences do not always translate. I've been a driver school instructor on the track for over 10 years and competed for years before that. I've competed in a couple Grand Tourismo tournements. At one, I tied for last. (my son, who was 8 at the tiime tied for first). Nobody else at the tournement had as many lifetime track days as I do in one year. The video expeience can help, but is not directly translated....or visa versa.

I have Guitar Hero III and Rock Band for my PS3. It's alot of fun but the most fun I get out of it is watching my 5 year old play it. He loves it, loves most of the songs on Rock Band and now when he's in my truck, he's back there in his booster seat pretending he's playing guitar to whatever music I have on. What a feeling! He has a small First Act drum kit in my guitar room and a Fisher Price plastic guitar that he jams out on but I think it's time to up the ante and get him a small scale electric!!!!

I think the Guitar Hero effect is real and is positive.

When you get in trouble....indeed, they are.

But it's uncanny how well those games depict it.

When you get in trouble, it's actually easier (for me) to correct an oversteer in a RWD car than an understeer in a FWD car... I've had many near-hairy track incidences because of brake fade, understeer, and failure to correct. I've wrecked my old Alfa Romeo because of something like this.

It's actually easier to correct when you're using throttle control. All you need is torque...

I bought my subaru WRX after playing one on GT. I actually got one of the first ones sold in the US. It was a new car to the market and every one who played that game liked or respected that car..This was before you could get a sti or evo so it was kind of exotic for a minute.

Kids from playing guitar hero are going to be familier with the gibson line......rock band fender. But guitar hero and gibson are no longer in bed together .......It would be cool to se my charecter use an axis or y2d.....

BP I just got my Axis yesterday and It ROCKS...thanks to everyone involved in building this sweet guitar.
