The one I played at the store had big differences in tone between switch settings.

That's what got me hooked, trying one at the store...
Now if time could fly a little faster... tap, tap, tap...
anxiously waiting for my baby to be born... and shipped!

I am pretty sure I am going to install a coil tap in my HH ST at some point in the near future.Just a little mini toggle or button that will defeat the front coil when the bass has all four coils going at once.So that I have at least one 3 pickup option.

Just to clarify the stingray you can still have the function of having the usual stingray humbucker set up then you can have either H H, HS, SS. Is this correct. I thought by adding the extra pickup and different possibilities it would open up a lot of tonal possibilities. Seems some people dont hear that much and others do. Very interesting. Id assume using 2 Humbuckers increases the volume as well ?

On the dual pickup Stingrays, the bridge pickup is in the same position as it is on the single pickup basses. What does that mean? That you can get the 'standard' Stingray tone from a dual pickup model. To my ear, and according to everyone who's expressed an opinion so far, the classic Stingray tone is there.

So yes, you're right - you get the Stingray sound plus the added tonal options with whatever neck pickup you choose. It does open up a lot of possibilities.

The people who are not hearing the differences? Confusing to me. My ears are old and shot and very accustomed to old school thump, but I hear it quite clearly.

I'm getting this mod done so I can have the Hum/single option on my bass....an option that is NOT offered on the double hum Stingray. You can get any combination of any two coils or, all four coils at once ...but no three coil (hum/single) position.
I'll see how that goes and then I might replace the volume with a pan knob...but that is a much more difficult mod (it involves replacing the blade switch )...but thats not a really vital mod or anything.
Actually the back two coils soloed(the classic Stingray pickup configuration) is quite a bit louder than any of the other pickup positions (even the four coils position is quieter)
I am not endevouring to tell MM what to do, but , one more position on the switch (with coils 1,2 and 3)would have been great! Then I guess you wouldn't have had to bother with the hum/single model of the bass.

The differences are subtle but enough to better adapt the old warrior to different styles of music.

1: Stingray
2: A delicate, but full and defined tone.
3: Chug chug chug rock (this position is not as nuanced as the others)
4: A defined, burpy tone (think Glenn Hughes in Deep Purple: Made in Europe)
5: Dub or 8th note rock

I tend to stay @ 1 and 4. +1 to Phatty's observation that distortion blurs the differences in tone between settings.

I love both of my HH Rays. I won't say that they are better than 1H models. They are just another choice for the MM player.

[ I always just assume that I'm a tool and not hearing what everyone else is...

I'm really a set it and forget it kind of guy. I don't do a whole lot of knob (and now switch) fiddling.[/QUOTE]

Fuzzy you said it not me
THere are some who say you do a lot of knob fiddling!!!!!

Seriously I cannot believe that soem of you cannot hear the difference between the positions

I think that we all thought that the two PU's would kill off the singles for awhile and the truth is that it didn't , it may have actually helped the singles.

I should have seen that one coming! Sheesh, mentioning tool and knob fiddling in the same post...
