They seem to be selling out most of these shows in a few minutes, so I guess they priced 'em right. I'd like to go, but not at these prices and not in a basketball arena. I'll wait for the DVD. If any of you out there got tickets, though, more power to ya. I can think of shows I'd pay $250 to see, but the reformed Police isn't one of them. I'm sure they'll kick ass, though.

say what? Should I screen my threads with you in the future? Im not sure that the market will bear these prices out of major markets

Of course not (to either statement)!

The market certainly won't bear those prices outside of major markets. That's obvious.

Which is why the Police aren't going to play at my favorite venue, Toad's Place in New Haven. So what? If I wanted to see them badly enough, I'd travel to a major market and pay whatever it costs. This is economics in action.

Now, if nobody wanted to pay the prices being asked, then they'd HAVE to play venues like Toad's Place, right?

There are no value judgements here. It's just simple economics.

BP, you price your product to match the market, don't you? Just like everyone else.

The fact is that there are enough consumers out there willing to pay $X,XXX for your product to keep you in business. There are many less expensive alternatives, but none meet the needs of your customers.

So you charge as much as we're wiling to pay. Just like every other company on the planet.

The exact same principle applies to concert promoters. If people want to see The Police, then they pay the ticket price or stay home.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with that. It's obvious that we all think it's outrageous, but we don't count. Only those who buy tickets do.

I've been on the wrong side of this equation myself, but I don't bitch about it. It's put up or shut up...if you want to play, you have to pay. If you don't, somebody else will.

I got to see them in their prime - not interested in the re-runs...

It would've been nice to share with my kids, though. Thank heaven for DVD's...

And while they were once, and continue to be one of my favorite bands, Sting was ALWAYS in it for the money.

I recall some interview wa-a-a-y-y-y-y back when he remarked about their musical transition from theri first album on through. Basically claimed they played what sold until they could play what they wanted to play.

Well, most times that's how you make it big in the biz...

Which explains the whole 16th century lute music I would guess.

It also explains John Mayer's trajectory from his debut album to the trio project and "Continuum."

cant remember the last GOOD concert i went to, and I dont think id spend that kinda money on anyone. Why is it that a lot of concerts seem to be a let down for me over the past few years?

ps- the last great gig i went to was Eric Johnson supported my The Hellecasters. 4 years ago ( i think).

I won't pay more than $35 or so for a concert ticket. Of course, that doesn't explain why I gladly sprung for airfare to New York to see Dream Theater.

I used to work for FedEx in the 80's in Venice Ca. (lived there too) Andy Summers was a customer of mine, and when he called for a package pick up, he was NEVER ready when I showed up. The place he had on Market St. was a recording studio on the ground level, and his living quarters upstairs. He knew I played guitar, and when I had to wait for a package, he would point to a wall of VERY cool guitars, and tell me to go pick one and have at it. I got to play some really cool guitars. He was a great guy. I would guess he still is.

I would not pay $200 or more dollars to see them. Anything is worth whatever someone will pay for it, it just won't be me paying that much. At least they are not the band that asks for 3rd world debt reduction while charging prices in the same range as The Police...Dudley Moore and some other folks had a restaurant across the street from Andy's place called 73 Market street. Good food, and Dudley would show up and play piano and sing.

Andy Summers came to a gig I was playing in Houston in the late 70s, maybe extremely early 80s. He also brought along Stewart, and both were exceptionally nice and hung out with us for most of the evening. They were in town for a concert the next evening.

"Where's that bass player?" I of course asked.

"Too famous to hang out", was the basic answer.

For $250 dollars, I'd expect Sting to come over and make dinner, but then I'm old and completely unrealistic about ticket prices in my doddering old age.

When I was the FedEx guy, Andy was not too kind when it came to Mr Sumner. He always said Stewart was a class act.

I am more doddering than you mife rend.

I thought, considering they hadn't played in how many ever years, that they would've blown the doors off the place with something a little less textbook than "Roxanne". The arrangement they chose, as well, just left me saying...meh.
I was hoping they'd play something like Synchronicity! I was all hyped up for it and it turned out to be a big snoozefest.:(

I might pay 50 bucks to watch Stewart Copeland just play his hi-hats.

I'd agree with that. A few years ago I paid about that much to see Oysterhead in Asheville, NC (Stew with Les Claypool and the guitarist from Phish, Trey whose last name I can't spell) and I spent most of the show watching the drummer. That was fun.

Allow me to date myself....I grew up listening to Police and Sting albums pumping through my parents tower speaker system as my mom would be vacuuming, cleaning and chasing me around in circles....In fact The Police, Paul Simon's Grace Land and David Lee Roth's Paradise were among the first CD's to hit the Scoles household in the mid-eighties when cd players started to become common house hold items. And all three will always remind me of my mom juggling house hold chores and about 6 or 7 neighbor kids running through the house!!! Mom will be attending The Police concert in Oakland!!! Wonder if she's bringing the vacuum.

You do know that the whole point of the tour/appearance on the Grammys/etc is that this is the 30th Anniversary of the release of "Roxanne," right?

The Police are my all time favorite band....however, I personally will not put out that kind of money to see them. I will see them when they put out a DVD of the tour in the comfort of my home. ;)
