So anyways a friend just let me borrow a custom self made double neck. Fretless 6 string with fretted 4. one pbass pickup and the 6 stringer with soapbars. I felt too awkward and out of it. Anyone find double necks useful at all or better yet, is the weight and other issues too much to take for some benefits it might bring?

I think that most of all, they just look ridiculous, unless you are playing gospel and dancing around everywhere. Then they are acceptable.

the problem I would have with that concept is that you cant have a consistant hand position, which could easily lead to carpal etc....

Plus I have a two channel head I can swap basses in about 10 seconds.

I always liked the one that EVH had. It was a double neck with the guitar on bottom and a 6 string bass on top. VERY NICE!

but not exactly a double neck bass

double neck bass, is there such a thing???

seen plenty - usually 4x4 fretless/fretted - John Taylor has a 4 string with a guitar on the bottom and actually alternates in from chorus to versewhile playing live (don't know why though - song doesn't need it)

What about Rick N from Cheap Trick with his body double twin neck and the 5 neck!?!?!?

I couldn't do it and don't see the need but I guess if it is what floats your boat...

You want a cool doubleneck?

Ask Dudley about this one.

+1.

Although it would be cool to see a bassist rocking a doubleneck with a guitarist with a huge Gibson SG doubleneck playing in a dive bar in front of 6 people.

Seriously, unless you are soloing exclusively and have to switch between fretted and fretless or crazy alternative tunings during the same song, they are extremely impractical.

Personally, I can arrange a set list to ensure I play with the same bass for at least a few songs, I wouldn't play a song if I needed a doubleneck or had to switch basses during the same tune.

Only if you have a harmonica around your head and a couple of symbols tied to your knees
