In the case of System of a Down, I heard they were working with producer Rick Rubin, and he does not like to record with active instruments. Don't know why.

ok ok, new question. what about magnet size on the passive version? will there be more magnet to make up for the lost pre- amp or will you just have the regualr humbuckers with out the pre? this whole passive bongo thing is giving me a headache.

Sounds a lot like a guy that I know from Mississippi. You should check out some of his CD's. His name is Steve Forbert and he's been around a while.
