Well as the title says, this is completely off topic, but I don't hang around too many forums....
My name is Edgar Cancel, but ever since I was 16, I wanted to change my last name to Allan...
would that be too offensive to my family? To my Dad, even though he passed away?

Geez, that's hard to say.....have you approached your family about the idea?
If it's for a stage name, then why not?
Or is it because it sounds cool?
Or are you getting bullied over your current name?

Do explain....

Don't do it. YOU are who YOU are. Make YOUR name famous and then people won't be confused about who you are.

Plus, you're 16. While I still love some of my artistic influences from that age, you have many more opportunities to be inspired by others who, to you, may transpire the influence others may have had on you.

Additionally, I do think it can be a slam on your family. Be proud of who you are or where you came from.

Besides, I always like HP Lovecraft more!

Texas Finally!
Life is short , be happy all the way, so if changing your name makes you happy then do it. many years ago I was embarrassed by my name but now I love it and revel in it so do it if it makes you feel that way!

I once knew a guy who legally changed his name to Bugsy Nostradamas. I wish I were making this up. That being said, you should do whatever makes you happy.

That, ...is the most insane thing I've heard in a while.

wait til you hear about the guy named Mike Rotch.

BUC, he's not 16, just wanted to change his name since then.

Personally, I'd advice against changing it, but I'm just some dude on the internet.....who's last name is Ass Pears.

Duuuude - keep it. Edgar Allen is cool, but Eddie Cancel is easily cooler.

+1 Klon! That's pure rock star, damn, I almost wish that was MY name. Eddie Cancel and the Void…

Alright, new plan, let's start working on band names instead.

Not 16? Oooopps, mahbad.

OK then definitely not! Edgar Cancel is way cooler.

BTW, on an aside: My name is Robert but when I was a pilot in USAF my fellow pilots, for reasons that I won't bore you with here, started calling me BUC. It's an acronym (Back Up Control) but pronounced just like Buck. I'm not in the USAF anymore but everyone still calls me BUC, even my wife. I've tried to go back to using Robert or Rob like when I was younger and it's just impossible. Everyone knows you as who you are and I got tired of trying to change them.

I didn't choose the name, it chose me.

Don't actually know if there's any wisdom in there for you but I am familiar with being a man of many names!
