You can see they are just showing what they can do, you can see the smiles on their faces that they are loving just having fun. Not for everyone though.

Awww, I get it. You guys thought they were trying to do music?

Pfff, that's absurd. What's wrong with you? :)

Seriously, I think they were just trying to make some noise. They are allowed, right?

*Note to self: understand that some bass players can't seem to fathom the idea that a bass guitar can be used in different ways other that just playing root-5.

Not trying to start an argument with you, bassmonkey. . . I also despise senseless wanking and "souless" techniques, but I think that Victor Wooten is a true musician capable of playing anything. He can play like Jaco, Rocco, or Jamerson, but he is his own person and chooses to play in his style.

He is not playing "bass", he is making music, be it a bass or an accordion. Just because he is playing bass in an unorthodox way should not automatically discredit him.

I'm a fan of his, but I listen to The Meters, James Brown, or Tower of Power more than I listen to his recordings (because I happen to find some of his band's compositions less than stellar), but to imply he is a wanker, ticks me off. A lot of his work with Bela Fleck is remarkable: pure soul and music to my ears.

To each his own. Respectfully.

Wow, that second video is truly incredible musicianship! And anyone who can't call THIS one music... well... I guess Fieldy is, right?

Here's another for you to try:

And if you can't call this one music/musicianship... well, there's no hope. :(

As good a player as he is, its very repetitive and the way guys like Vic Wooten and Steve Bailey play jazz makes it very tiresome and gets iritating hearing them do the same chord progressions. Great skill, let down by not so great songs/songwriting.

I thought it was a lot of fun, actually:) Not something I'd be interested in doing, and I wouldn't buy the record, but fun all the same.

One thing that I don't get is how their respective right hands survive? A lot of the stuff looks extremely painful...

Come on .....................that was cool stuff, improvisation, rhythm, fast, funky, fun... It doesn't always have to be a landscape painting, abstract is cool and interesting too.

Re-read my posts. I didn't say it wasn't musical. I didn't say he was wanking(think that was another poster or two). What I said was that it wasn't using the bass in its' fundamental role, which as I see it, is the glue which sticks the rhythm, harmony and melody of a song together.

What I DID say was that technically it is flawless. I can appreciate the hours of practice which must have gone into perfecting the technique. However, it leaves me cold. I do not find his musical ideas terribly interesting or inspiring. Horses for courses I suppose. Respectfully.

my fav. stuff he plays is with bela.
I can only handle so much solo bass stuff at once.
Your average person can handle about 25seconds of it.

Next time someone posts a thread called "Wank-o-rama", I better see some T&A.

And if someone replies to this post with a picture of PsychoWards Christmas photos....well..I'd almost expect it. ;)
