Funky Music is in our set list.

I wish it weren't because it's SO tired and cliched, but there's no denying that it gets the girls up and dancing every single time.

Which is the whole point.

So it stays.

It's the never-ending battle between what you WANT to play and what you OUGHT to play. The cool stuff keeps getting left off of the list in favor of the stuff that gets butts out of seats.

I draw the line at Margaritaville, though. Even Buffett sounds like he's sick to death of it at this point.

By the way.... I suggest avoiding the overwhelming temptation to pop/slap Funky Music. It really seems like you should, but if you simplify it as much as possible (fewer notes) and play it with your fingers it sounds MUCH tighter and punchier. Listen closely to the record... you'll hear what I mean.

It's not much on the left hand, but it's hell on the right hand

I'm not in a band, but in addition to my own grooves, I'm currently working on "Classical Thump", and a few Bach pieces (recently got a great book, "Bach for Bass"). That Bach dude really knew his phrasing. Last weekend I learned "What was I thinking? (311) and "There's only so much oil" (T.O.P.).

Thinking about auditioning with these guys. I like their stuff, they're in my area, and I'm ready to get back into the scene.

Edit: Will need a 5'er. ;)

"New Sensation" by INXS (was played live last night for the first time)
"Sick as a Dog" by Aerosmith
possibly another Kings of Leon song that isn't "On Call" (we learned it, but don't really play it anymore); I say it should either be "Use Somebody" or "True Love Way"

There are a whole bunch of cover songs we'd like to play, but they vary by band member. Usually we tackle two at a time.

these are in the "want to" category vs. the "ought to"...
Muse - Hyesteria
Avenged Sevenfold - Bat Country
Metallica - Enter Sandman / Motorbreath
Zeppelin - apparently not many crowd pleasers, but so much fun!

other newbies to the list that i love to play...
Foo Fighters - Pretender
ZZ Top - Tush
Weezer - No One Else
Guns - Mr. Brownstone

...now, if we could just find a bass player & a gig :)

I just recently got together with a local female artist, guitar player and drummer that I have been playing with for a long time.... She mainly does originals... so we started writing parts to her new songs, and we are also going to do a few covers... so far my favorite cover:

"Fell in love with a boy" by Joss Stone (wonderful work with a Q-Tron :) )

Also been working out my slap n' poppin chops since I got my Sterling, it just sounds so good.

I'm working on some new originals. I'm hoping to have about 4 new ones ready for the stage by August. Our practice time to work on new stuff has been cut dramatically because we've been so busy, so it's kinda slow moving right now with the whole band writing. We're also going into the studio this Fall, so we're working torwards that, and lastly, we've been working on designing new
T-shirts for the band. We just got them ordered this week and they'll be in next Friday. Here's what they look like, what do yall think?

I'm working on some new originals.

So we became The Originals. And we had to change our name actually.... there was another group in the east end called 'The Originals' and we had to rename ourselves. 'The New Originals'. and then, uh, they became.... 'The Regulars', they changed their name back to 'The Regulars' and we thought well, we could go back to 'The Originals' but what's the point?

Well, you could have trumped them by calling yourselves 'The Original Originals.' Then they could have called themselves 'The Real Originals' and you could have responded to that with 'No, WE'RE The Originals, Dammit!'

And so on. :D

It's like the legendary Ray's Pizza in NYC. There are LOTS AND LOTS of them now...all slight variations on the name. Original Ray's, Famous Ray's, etc. At this point few people actually know which one is the real one, or even if it still exists.

Best band name I've seen recently:

The The Band Band

There you go. You know exactly what they're all about right up front.

I like it. Depending on the colour of the shirt, I might even want one...

Shirts are white. Seems like everyone does the typical "black" t shirt thing, and we wanted to be different. Plus they cost less, so we charge less to our fans.

You probably already know this, but just incase you didn't recognize it, it was a quote from Spinal Tap. :)

Starting to play with some guys from work. First 2 songs: Ziggy Stardust and Sunday Papers (Joe Jackson). The Jackson tune is one I wasn't familiar with - fun bass line. Thoughts on getting that tone (the studio version), you guys? The first thing that comes to my mind is position 5/neck H on an SR4HH. Or the "p killer" tone I've heard on the 25th HSS samples.

Graham Maby ....

People always ask what I used when I made the first Joe Jackson albums back in the dark ages: first off, a 1970s Ibanez Silver Series bass (a fairly inexpensive Jazz Bass knockoff with P /J pickups). I played it, strung with Rotosound flatwounds, often using a pick, through a Fender Bassman 135, and matching Bassman 4x12 cabinet - this is still one of the best bass rigs I ever used and wish I still had it. Back then I was not afraid to turn up the treble, and that accompanied by the producer and Joe’s artistic decision to push the bass upfront as the featured instrument (no guitar solos) led to that distinctive bass sound.
