What does the "filter" on the Stingray 5H do?

I don't own my SR5 anymore, but pretty sure it was single coil with an air coil to make it humbucking.
When did they change that to a filter? And is there anything to corroborate that beyond internet hearsay?

ah jeez, that's me out on the regular SR5. I really like the single coil position. Use it all the time on my sterling. I'll have to check if the Sterling 5 does that too.

well the Sterling schematics that you get from teh Sterling5 page don't actually reference the 5-er. Though they also don't say anything about a filter.

The sterling Electronics are pretty much identical for the 4 and 5 string versions. The sterling originally was, after all, a 4 string version of the stingray 5. When they brought out the sterling 5 in 2008, it's my understanding that the electronics were identical to the ones in the Stingray 5 prior to that point. Then they redesigned the Stingray 5 electronics based around the Alnico magnet pickups. This way, the stingray 5 once again sounded pretty much like the stingray 4, and the sterling 5 sounded just like the sterling 4.

There have been a bunch of different revisions to the pickup switching and electronics on the Stingray 5. I know that some versions did not have a phantom coil, and just ran a single coil in the middle position, so you'd have some hum. They also used various different phantom coil configurations.

My Stingray 5HS has the same electronics that are currently in the Sterling 5 HS, according to EBMM. The single coil is actually a stacked single, and there is no phantom coil.

Anyway, I do love both my Stingray 5s, though they do sound quite a bit different due to the pickup selection options, and the pickups themselves. I just really would like to know what the "filter" listed on the schematics actually does.

I use the single coil/mid position on my ceramic SR5 nearly as much as parallel. To my ears its a really great tone from that position, a bit more nasal and wirey than parallel or series is my best description for it. I dont have any experience of the filter setting or the alnico pickup on the SR5 but if its fat and mellow,I'll bet it sits great in a live setting or recorded mix (would have to be something special to out do parallel for that though)

I was surprised by the filter on my new SR5. I really like it. It's warm and fat.

I miss the nasty 2 position. It was funky. I'd use it as an effect, or on the bridge of a song or an odd solo/weird lead. Sort of, an acquired taste.

So if you want a true single coil sound, from an actual
single coil in play, wouldn't that still be available on an
HS? I've got an alnico SR5HS and also the Sterling HS,
both of which, IIRC, use one of the other coils onboard
as a phantom. Anywho, the single coil mid position has
the craziest hypernasal tone of an EBMM I've ever had,
on both the SR and the Sterling. The only MM I've ever
played with even more hyper SC tone was my Leo era
Sabre ... no phantom and distinctly authentic SC hum !
... "tick tack" bass ? Yazzuh, cummin right up ! I spoze
a 1st generation SR5 [no phantom] might do the same,
but I've never played one.

AFAIK, there is no "filter" setting on any HS versions.

HS is the best way to go to get single coils.

Just bought a SR5, where do the red and black wires coming off the pickup connect to. Am getting ground hum in position 1 and 3 but not in 2. Pulled off the pg and the green and white and the ground are connected but not the red and black wires. Thanks!

If you go to Google image search, and type in "stingray 5 wiring", some schematics will appear, some of them from this forum. Hopefully one of them can help. The first one that popped up when I tried the search, had the color names of the wires written in text.

Will this 10/31/96 schematics from ceramics SR5 do the job for a modern alnico one? Different PUs and different position modes are not affecting the overall wiring?

I emailed customer service last night. They emailed me back this morning with a wiring dia. and I soldered the wires back on. And wala, bass sounds great! CS really does ROCK!

EBMM really is the best customer service in the MI industry. At least in my experience. Moog, Mesa, Lexicon etc are all ok or just good enough. The Musicman guys seem to enjoy their jobs and love their company.

To me it seems that it is parallel mode with a cap on the sparkle highs. There's also the perception of a slight low boost or a slight dip in the low mids.
