hello you all, I've been reading this forum a lot but did not post often, At first I'd like to say this place is as great as the instruments build by the EB team: top notch!!!

BUT i've always wondered why you folks at EB use tung oil finish for a neck, I know its probably to get that vintage, broken in feel of a basse but it personnaly turns me of, when a a stingray/sterling/sr5 with maple board, my only desire is to bring it to my luthier and to have a gloss finish sprayed on it.... So my question is, why do you prefer tung oil??? and most important, why did you switch a long time ago from gloss to oil finishes???

Thanks for helping me out

ps: i'm turning 20 this year I'd be reaally tempted by a 20th SR5 HS rosewood with matching Headtock, have you build one yet, so I can see pics of it????

Player preference. A few people pop up now and again and prefer the old poly-finished necks, but most of the comments on the gunstock oil and wax finished necks are overwhelmingly positive.

same here. in fact, that's the only reason i don't own any of the newer basses. i will be buying a 20th anniv. SR5, tho, and am going to have the neck refinished. i wonder if they would send me one from the factory bare... (ya' right!)

I have new and old ones, and I actually prefer the old poly finish for durability. The new ones are fine, though.

 I thought the tung oil finish was only with the guitars from vintage bass

I can tell you this, there is no way in hell I'd take any of my basses to anyone to have the finish changed in any way.

Well in fact, being a student and a long time EBMM fan I've never got the oportunity to buy one because you know the cash.... besides that, new stingrays cost like 2000 dollars in europe retail so..... anyway my local luthier ( IN Belgium), once showed me an old J bass with the poly gloss finish, and I directly brought him my ATK 400 for a gloss coating, I've never looked back, I like it so much!!!

so anyway, I can still bring it to my luthier If I really dont like it, I seem to be more concerned with this minor issue with a Maple/maple board neck than one with rosewood , because I have the impression that maple/maple will be dirty very quick!!!

anyway I can understand people prefer this broken in feel but I always tought it was strange looking at the neck finish VS the body finish on a MM bass like not coherent, but again, that's just me!!!

damn that SR5 is killing me!!!

As already been said: I think that the majority of players prefers the gunstock oil necks, in stead of the glossy ones. I prefer the gunstock oil anyway. To me, it feels and plays so much nicer and quicker than a glossy neck. And when you get sweaty hands (like I do), it think the neck remains more playable than a glossy one. That's my 0.02 anyway...

Nice friendly hello from Belgium right back at ya, and you are certainly right! Belgian beers are the best in the world, and instruments are waaaaayy too expensive... But hey, an EBMM is always worth the investment!

Count me in for one that prefers the gunstock oil finish neck. Fastest and best neck there is IMHO.

The Bongo offers the neck you want :)
