So???

Okay, will someone PLEASE get some DETAILS on the amp and effects???

I've watched that video like 50 times, and I've DYING to know. I'm going to post this request WEEKLY until somebody tells me. I will NOT give up.

At 2:02, there's a delay or reverb tail (I'd say reverb).

At 2:13, there's a volume swell from clean to dirty.

At 3:03, there's a pickup change from clean to dirty, and his foot clearly doesn't move.

So, I'd say he's doing EVERYTHING from the guitar, with no pedals, through ONE amp channel. That is the most amazing thing I've EVER SEEN.

Can someone please confirm that's all one amp channel? And PLEASE find out what amp!!! I'm begging!!!

Does sound like there's a bit of reverb there- more than just the room would have. Probably onboard 'verb. Not sure what amp- there are a ton in the amp room. Hopefully somebody at MM can tell you. (I'm guessing Marshall.)

Yup, all the sonic changes are from Steve's hands and the guitar. Those pickups cover a WIDE range of sounds- the single coil is purposely lower output so he can quickly jump to a clean sound. And the humbucker cleans up really well with a roll of the volume pot.

Steve's a master technician and that guitar is the Swiss Army knife of guitars

Hands? Amp? Guitar?

> it's not the amp achieveing the sound.......it's steve's hands
> & guitar. he can get that sound from a pignose.....

Yes, I agree it's mainly in his hands. And use of the volume knob.

The guitar helps, but I think he can get that sound from a Strat or Les Paul.

I think he would have a hard time getting that sound from a Fender amp without a pedal. He would need to crank the amp *way* up.

So, yes, any good single-channel high-gain amp would probably do fine. But that's a revelation, because Mesa, Peavey, EVH, Diezel, etc are all pushing three- and four-channel heads.

The amp in that video has a *really* nice distortion channel. And the reverb sits beautifully over the distortion. Usually Steve uses a separate wet/dry setup to sound that good. So, yes, PLEASE tell us what amp he's playing through.

It's a total revelation to me that it's possible to get those sounds just from the guitar.

It does help that the guitar is flexible. It's also amazing that the Y2D is basically just an H-S-H configuration. That's way simpler than the old model. Does Steve's personal guitar have any extra toggles? :)

BTW, it took me stupidly long to find the EBMM technical page with the pickup selector information:

http://www.ernieball.com/mmonline/techinfo/

Here are some keywords to help people find it later: 3-way, 5-way, configuration, control layout, selection, toggle switch, volume knob, tone knob.

the song is called "sometimes I feel like screaming" . I love this song, IMO it is the best Deep Purple with Steve song

+1 :)

I love the part before the harmonics- the tone and then the vol control swells. Some really nice stuff in there.

The Flash files aren't streamed, they're downloaded and so are in your cached Internet files directory. If you know what you're doing, just watch them then go to that directory and sort by date or size, presto .flv files. The drawback is you need an FLV player to watch them (there are a bunch, Google them). There are also a few applications that will let you download FLV files from your browser and rip them out of the embedded .swf player.

Then you can use a program like MediaCoder (free) to transcode to any format you like. For figuring out parts I demux (rip out) the audio and convert to .mp3. Finally, you can use a program like Ronimusic's "Amazing Slow Downer" to loop sections within the mp3s and slow them down or change pitch. Makes figuring stuff out a breeze.

I know that sounds like a bit of a pain but it's worth getting the hang of

Here's that vid transcoded to mpeg. (Right-click and "save as".)

I've always wondered how to do that!!!! Thanks.

I'd like to see that! :p
So where does he plug in the cable?;)

David

David, the guitar that comes from the factory is exactly the same as what Steve plays. He has a preproduction Y2D that had an extra toggle switch, but it was done away with for the final model.

As for the amp, sorry man can't help you.

Amp?

Okay, it's been a week. I'd like to find out what amp Steve was using in those videos. Who can I ask? Should I call EBMM tech support? Can someone who is connected please PM or email the right person and find out? I'd appreciate it greatly. Thanks...

Sorry, but if those questions haven't beend answered yet (the thread is almost half a year old), it probably won't. Take into consideration that the vids were shot in 2005 and only the people in that room know and I'm pretty damn sure they are busy folks.

I would recommend you to check SM's website: stevemorse.com: Equipment

He sure didn't use his Engl rig for those vids. Plus, I'm not even sure he had his Engl rig by that time!

Not an ENGL...

> Plus, I'm not even sure he had his Engl rig by that time!

Exactly. People were pretty sure it's one of the amps in the EBMM amp room. This really isn't a very difficult question. Could someone from EB tech support please ask the right person and find out? Thanks...

Maybe someone going to Dubaldo's Steve Morse clinic today can ask Steve himself.

Marshall DSL-100

Derek at EB was kind enough to tell me that the amp was a Marshall DSL-100 with 4x12 slant cab. Thanks Derek!

What a relief -- now I don't have to go all OCD anymore...
