Would it be safe to put BP down as a reference?

I can't recommend my employer of the past 10 years.

Of course, missile catcher is a very short lived career. You won't have time to think about how middle management treats you.

After spending some time with maddog I now know he isn't kidding.

I'm liking the G.C. idea. I used to think when I retire I'd ultimately work for someone like Home Depot. Now I'm thinking G.C.

Oh Uncle Marty......

I still wish GC was opening up here soon.

I've got applications in at Starbucks, Petsmart, PetCO, Home Depot, Lowes, TSYS, Circuit City, and Zaxbys (last resort). Hopefully i'll get a call back from Petsmart.

You guys rock. :)

I have no doubt that there are situations at mid- and large-sized companies that are just great. All I know is that whenever I work for a small firm, I like my job a whole lot more and those are the reasons. Take that for what it's worth, which is precisely nothing. Your situation will be different.

Whenever I've found myself in a situation that requires me to report to a person who reports to a person who reports to someone else, I have to spend more time on unproductive things and less time on actually getting the job done.

I've worked for small firms, big firms, and I was even self-employed for three years. Every situation is different, pluses and minuses can be found wherever you look. My small firm experience was great until the guy who hired me left for another firm, then it went downhill pretty quickly. The problem with small firms is that there are fewer places to hide if you have an issue with someone.

Benefits can also be better in big companies, though that's not always the case. Bigger typically means more bureaucracy, but you have to weigh that against whatever advantages there may be. Self-employment had its moments, but it's a tough gig and I found myself spending more time doing administrative crap and trying to collect from clients than I spent actually working. Plus paying your own medical insurance out of pocket gets expensive real fast.

My current company is probably 5,000 employees, but the benefits and predictable hours outweigh the bureaucratic hassles. Others view it differently, and I may change my mind in a few years (I've been working there since '99) but I've certainly had worse jobs, and sometimes I have to remind myself of that.

Bottom line, you usually have to work a few places to figure out what you like and what you want from a job. Good luck.

Good luck Stanky. Just don't expect to be working the front end of the dog cages being a new hire and all.

Petsmart does deal animals, food, toys, accessories, and dog training.

I'll be a Pet Care Specialist. I'll be maintaining and selling frogs, snakes, iguanas, salamanders, birds, hamsters, gerbils, fish, and some kitties.

Should be fun. I love animals. :)
