this is the beginning of my ebmm story:

this recording session was my first real gig in nashville, my first time in a real studio, played on my first real bass, a white ernie ball music man stingray 5 with the most beautiful birdseye maple neck i have ever seen to this day. this song also quickly went to the top of the charts, and became my first number 1 billboard smash hit. coincidence???? i think not! anyone ever heard this???

that is a great compliment. our job as bass players is to not only be the foundation of the whole structure, but also to add weight to the melody, and emotion of the tune, while still at the same time, not having the whole show be about you. very very hard to pull off.

actually, flea hated me for years, because i recorded my bass line right over the top of his failed attempt (24 tracks was all u got back then). that didnt go so well with him being the big shot that he was at the time. its still dicey whenever i run into him at airports or gigs. hahaha.

I remember that time well...when Female artists took over the charts and the world...
Sarah McLachlan, Dido, All I wanna Do Girl, etc....Great mid tempo tunes...They Kicked butt.

Nashville is a long way from Alaska!

Nice first real gig! Those little upper bass flourishes sound so smooth it almost sounds like fretless. I too, never really noticed the bassline before. That's a good thing, because it means that is doesn't detract from the song. Tasteful and supportive. Perfect, really. Nice work!

I liked Jewels early stuff. Did you do the whole album Craig (the one this was on)?

One of my favorite things that Ive heard of your playing is how at times, you seem to use vibrato. Ive heard on some of your tunes ranging from subtle to more noticable. Its a great way to accent certain parts/notes and I have to be honest, after listening to you for a while, I started to "cop" that. Hope you dont mind.:D We joke a lot about what a fan I am of yours, but songs like this show why Ive dug your playing for so long. You have a very keen sense of note length, and placement. The tone, well that goes unsaid.

Craig.... I always wondered who that was on bass during my close to 2000 spins on that song when i worked in pop radio. Great track! JOSH
