I don't own any Ernie Ball basses, but I really want to get one (to start with!), and I need some advice.

I like 5-strings, but when I have tried Stingrays, the 4-strings seem to have more punch and life, especially on the E string. Is this anybody else's experience also? I like a low B string, but I don't want to sacrifice a massive-sounding E like some 5 string basses do...

I would like to get a 2-humbucker model, what are the differences between the Stingray HH and the Bongo HH? Sound, feel, and playability-wise, I mean.

I'm going to start checking out EB basses in stores, but I would appreciate some advice from all of you wise elder-types.

I say Bongo5. I like 'em but that is just me.

That and they have 9 more volts than the SR's.

Try 'em all.
Then buy a Bongo.

Why?

'cause it's the Right Thing To Do.

Play 'em...

Sounds like you could go for either a Bongo 5 HH or a Stingray 5 HH.

The only real way for you to know which you would prefer is to try them. We all have our preferences and each are different. I would go for the SR5 HH... but, again, that's just me.

I think both of them offer something that the other doesn't. It's up to YOU to decide which aspects of the sound and electronics (and feel and looks) rock your world and which are nice, but you can live without.

Try, try, try...

I think the E string on my SR5 is just fine - no lack of ...er "balls". And of course the B booms.

I will have to wait for my DD Bongo 5 before I can give you an opinion on that one.

As Chris says it's down to you. There isn't a bad bass produced by EBMM so it's all a question of preference. For every person who says Bongo there will be one who says Ray. Happy hunting. And remember - when the purchase is made we demand the story and pics!

First, Welcome to the forum!

I say buy a Bongo5 and a StingRay5, play them both, a lot, fall in love with them and keep them forever! Then start buying each in all the pickup combo's, then colors, make sure to have some cash around for the occasional eBay find. :D :D

That sort of thing does happen and there's nothing wrong with that.

Really, try a few Balls and see which one speaks to you, good luck in your search.

The major difference is the electronics. The Bongo preamp is 18v, four band and is capable of melting your face off.

I have no direct experience with the SR preamp but I do know that it's 9V, 3-band. I suspect it can give you third-degree burns, but if you're looking for Godzilla's atomic breath, the Bongo is the thing.

I would go for the sr5HH. I think it honestly sounds better than the bongo.

Not that the bongo is bad by any means, but something about the SR4 and 5 just does it right.

that and I prefer oil and waxed wood vs the satin painted bongo neck.

Bongos and Stingrays are definitely different basses, both in terms of tone and how they play. Check 'em both out and chances are you'll wind up with both eventually. :D I haven't spent much time with SR5's, but the Bongo 5 neck plays faster to me.

I don't know about better, but certainly different! I played both yesterday and actually liked the sound of the Bongo but I think the SR5 is just a classic and will have to be my next MM...For some reason I have my heart set on an SR5 HH....I just got a Natural SR4 HH today and REALLY want an SR5 HH now....Does anyone know if the 20th SR5 will come in an HH????? SOMEBODY??? PLEASE????? PRETTY PLEASE???

:D

Peace,
