The tolex cases to me exude old-world quality and I like that a lot. That being said, I also feel like I have to be more careful not to scratch up the leather and covering because I like to keep my gear in tip-top shape....
Seriously though, one of my favourite things about the EBMM owning experience is the fact that there is a cut-out for the trem arm so you don't have to remove the arm when putting it back in the case. A little thing maybe but genius nonetheless. Whoever thought of that gets the Coldsummer Platinum seal of approval and a big gold star!
I prefer the plastic case because you can bang it around and protect your guitar like a case is supposed to do. With the tolex ones I'm devoting too much effort in keeping it pristine.

I dont like the latches on the tolex BFR case, i find they can open easily whene you dont want them to, they look flimzy and i find the plastic molded cases protect the guitar better. But do they fit a jpx? Can anyone who has both shed some light??
I love the old tolex case (the smaller one) for the look and the vintage touch. That being said one regular basis the SKB case is doing the job and is less heavy. this is the one I carry to gigs; For reheashal I take the original case
For protection, I like the plastic. Some of the tolex cases are too small to fit my Al. For rehersals, I want something small, so either use a gig bag or chain saw sized case meant for other guitars.
I prefer the plastic moulded.
Even more so I MUCH prefer the plastic cases that are "Gutar shaped" (you know what I mean ...)
I have used such a Hiscox case for one of my Als, and feel that it it doesn't take up much "real estate" in the boot/trunk of your car.
I prefer the older tolex version, it's what I grew up with, I was almost disappointed when my reflex came with the newer plastic case, but at the end of the day it's what's in the case that counts,
I like the shorter scale length and stackability of the molded cases. I imagine they're fairly close ruggedness wise. I use mostly tolex and they're definitely showing signs of wear after a few years in and out of the band trailer, but I only love them more, not less.
I put my BFR cases in the closet where gigging is concerned. They're beautiful, and I'm not ruining that leather. LOL So, for working purposes, I prefer the SKB. When I want to show my guitar to a friend who has wanted to see a JP in person... I take the BFR case...
When you're spending that much money for a guitar, it is nice that the special editions have a special case. Surely grabbing a plastic case for gigging isn't that big a deal if you're buying a 2500 dollar plus guitar. The only thing that I wish is that EB would sell the SKB version (with the ability to leave the trem in) on their website. I'd rather buy a case from them than someone else, but I understand that the logistics of that are iffy (I don't know of a guitar company that likes dealing with cases LOL).
All my original square cases fell apart so I use Hiscox molded cases now. Of the new EBMM ones, I certainly prefer the plastic ones. I expect with heavy gigging they will last longer!
