Who is the greatest guitarist ever?

Joe Pass is an incredible guitarist. He's been around a long time and is extremely gifted.

Re; Larry Carlton - There is a GREAT CD called No Substitutions, that's recorded live. It's Larry Carlton and Steve Lukather (our very own Lucious!), and they sound fabulous together.

Oh, yeah, DAnny Gatton! Hey Spuds, the only Danny Gatton I have is a CD with Joey DeFrancesco...what solo Gatton would you recommend? What is THE must-have CD by him?
 
Hi Victrola (or PK as you're known elsewhere)

I have 88 elmira street by Danny Gatton, it's all instrumental, and really amazing. I don't have any of his other works so I can't compare, but I think you would really like this one.

This is like trying to pick which ice cream is the best - it's fun but nearly impossible!

For me at the moment it's boiled down to 5. I know I'm not playing nice, eveyone else had to pick one.

Anyone who's been in G3, Steve Morse, Yngwie Malmsteen, Jimmy Page, Michael Hedges, especially Michael Hedges.

Plus, if you like Danny - Check out Johnny Hiland (self titled) excellent picker and includes a Gatton tribute track on the album.

No way! I gotta get that. I was taking guitar lessons around 1980 and my music teacher made me buy a Lee Ritenaur and Larry Carlton LP. Those guys ripped. Can't wait to hear this one.

Zon, it came out in the last 3-4 years I believe...a friend gave me the copy I have. There's some cool liner notes that talk about how Carlton was Lukather's mentor, for all the session work and such.

Lee Ritenour - hell yeah, another monster.
 
Umm, well I dont know about the best guitarist, but my favorite has to be Mike Campbell (dunno if thats how you spell his last name) from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Amazing player, and sooo much soul.
Listening to him play makes me happy :)

Yeah, I was always a Wayne Campbell fan myself. ...excellent!
 
hmm.. I don`t think there is a "Greates Guitarrist Ever". It allways depends on the influence they have in people, and its a matter of different tastes allso. That said, I think tho that there are "Guitar Greats", and for my taste i can name:

Seteve Morse, -Eric Johnson, Jeff Beck, John McLaughlin, Adrian Belew, Paco de Lucia


-In no specific order (excluding Morse, of corse he belongs there in 1st).
 
I'd have to say either Steve Morse as a guitarist in the sense that he plays the guitar extremely great, or Richie Sambora as a guitarist in the sense of a musician that plays a guitar :D ...he plays it very good, has extremely good song writing capablities, and on top of everything, sings like a God... So that Steve Morse as a stunning guitar playing techinician / player :D, and Richie Sambora as a guitarist with extremely good writing and singing capabilites.

And I'd just like to say that Sambora is extremely underrated... he has Heather, yes, but nobody will say he plays good because he has a good looking wife :D
 
Junior , I have to disagree, as technically great as Steve Morse is, he is first and foremost a composer. Steve's technical ability is always there to serve the music, his music isn't there to showcase his chops.

Just listen to things like Highland Wedding or Wooden Music - I can't see how anyone can say those are "guitar" tracks as opposed to beautiful compositions.

I agree with Hook 1000000000% on that statement, especially mentioning Highland Wedding. I love Morse the most out of any other guitar player, due to his AMAZING skill of composition and technique, because he is incredibly profficient at both and it just complements/balances one another perfectly. I like many other guitarists, but mainly it's EITHER for technique or composition. Not saying there is no other guitarist that is a good composer, but I dont think that I have heard of one that matches the likes of Mr. Morse.
 
I'm kinda concentrating on his work with Deep Purple here... comparing his work with DP and Sambora's work I'd almost definetly pick Sambora. Don't get me wrong, I'm absolutely amazed by both of them... The thing is I kinda feel more like listening to Sambora than DP lately... But a dream come true would be Richie on vocals and guitar, Steve Morse on guitar... (a little leader than Richie LOL:D), Dave LaRue on bass, Jon Lord on keyboards and John Bonham / Ian Paice on drums... :o :D
 
No offense to steve, and I'm sure he understands this better than we do, but DP IS NOT Steve's best playing, or writing.

For that you have to go back to his own songs. Many written when he was younger than most of the people on this here forum.
 
Well now that you are talking about him playing more specifically in DP, it is different. VERY different! He is not the only one writing the material, it is all of them together, except for some pieces he does maybe. But also he has to concider that there is a SINGER, so that definatly makes his guitar playing more layed back. HOWEVER, in my opinion he actually plays the CRAZIEST stuff WITH DP LIVE. If you guys have NOT seen the DVD in Australia Total Abandon, then you are gonna be blown away. And if you have seen it and didnt think much of it, you're straight up MESSED up in the head! He does some of the most amazing improv live w/ DP I have ever seen. Just watch Pictures of Home, and what he freakin does. And then there is his like 10 minute solo which is one of the most beautiful things I have EVER heard on a guitar, and it's LIVE!!!!
