Jeff beck and Eric Clapton are awesome too. should check up the Yardbirds

Ilove Clapton and Beck but I just love Jimmy PAge a bit more. Not to take away AT ALL from Clapton and Becks greatness :D

King Edward!

I would have to say that eddie Van Halen is the greatest simply because no one ever saw him comming. He took the guitar and did things with it that nobody had ever seen before. Not to mention the fact that nobody will ever look as cool as eddie on stage no matter how hard they try.I also like many guitar players that have emerged in the wake of eddie such as Steve Vai,Steve stevens, and Nuno bettencourt.Eddie my not be the fastest gunslinger anymore but he gets my vote just because he spawned an entire generation of guitar players.

is it Steve Vai? Is it Steve Hackett? Is it Steve Lukather? Is it Joe Satriani? Is it Kirk Hammett? what do you think?
Hi
Why do we need to find "The Greatest Guitar Player" I think that we should take what we can from each individual player. We cannot compare SRV with Eric Clapton or whoever else. I think that we should be discussing what we can learn from all of these wonderful musicians. It isn't a competition, the whole scene is a wealth of enjoyment and enlightenment for us all.
Thanks

Everyone that you have listed is not a guitar player, and they all suck.

Benji Madden is the best...Britney's not bad, but not as good as Benji.

Peace out in the hizzouse.

Ok... Does anyone else wanna smack this guy, I mean I joined the Forums just to yell at him!

In terms to the greatest guitarist, you just can't give away that title, in all actuality there is no greatest guitarist, b/c there could be some guy in a garage that can play better than Petrucci, or Malmsteen. Sure we can all have favorites, but we should all in our own way try to become our own greatist guitarists just jamming what we can and what we like, so to my fellow guitarists, ROCK ON!!!

many guitarists can become guitar greats but to become a guitar god they have to take it to another level. that is why i would say hendrix for the way he revolutionised guitar playing. there are probably another few guys who may have or may reach this level. If i was put money on someone new doing this i'd have to say joe bonamassa.

That's a tough one. There are so many greats. I think most talented I've ever heard... Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, Eddie Van Halen. My favorites are probably scrubs by comparison. Adam Jones... not so much for skill or speed, although he is good, but for his creativity and sound. Frederick Thorendale... His (and his bands') sense of timing is mind bending, and he is very original considering everyone likes to copy each other. His solos are insane.

ok ok.... in defense of our Moderator DWF, if you don't know it by now, is a little on the smart alecky side...

There was a post about Benji and he put his feelings in there. He then removed the thread and issued an apology.

I would definitely say....DWF does NOT think Benji is the best by any stretch of the imagination.

He really meant to say "Koogie is the best and you should all send him a 10 spot because he is the greatest!" BTW....just kidding....I can barely tune my axe.

I believe DWF's fav would be Mr. VH....correct me if I am wrong Mr. Mod....hehehehe

whos the best? - hm, depends on how you look at it.
to be important for other guitarists does not mean that you have to 16th notes arpeggios in 200 bpm or tap notes with all fingers of your right hand.
the things that make your hero so important for your are not mainly, his fastest solos but his songs, the way he improvises or writes, the sound & feel he givs you - in other words questions of personal taste.

but when it comes to the ability to play lots of people will agree that carlos santana is not on top of the list however his importants for the world of the guitar is not in question

the best guitarsts, from the standpoint of chops, that i'd mention:

john petrucci
steve vai
yngwie malmsteen
allan holdworth
al dimeola

from the standpoint of writing songs & improvising

eddie van halen
steve morse
ritchie blackmore
and of course jimi hendrix
among many others

Interesting way of looking at it Simon, except I would have to put Steve Morse in both groups, I think he has chops above and beyond even Vai and Malmsteen.

Not only that he can play in styles they cannot even approach. Yngwie and Vai play in a very narrow range of styles, Steve on the other hand seems to be a master of almost everything from jazz fusion to country.

I want to add another name that many (perhaps most) will not be familiar with.

LAURENCE JUBER

I discovered this guy on amazon while checking out some peoples lists of albums.

He did an album called LJ plays the Beatles. Solo fingerstyle arrangements of over a dozen Beatles tunes. I went and bought it. Absolutely amazing stuff. Turns out he played in Wings from 78-82.

But the guy is way more than Beatles tunes. I saw him give a clinic about a year ago and his own compositions are just incredible. Alternate tunings as well as standard tuning. Martin&Co gave him his own signature guitar.

Going to see him sept 11th in San Diego (Koogie?). He's got a couple of dvd's out that I have and recommed 1) THE GUITARIST 2) GUITAR NOIR, as well as a bunch of cd's. But watching him play these things is mind blowing.

He's starting to crack a select group of musicians whose music always seems to be in my head (MORSE, BELA FLECK, STEELY DAN).

And, for better or worse, my own

Great list guys, but I am surprised that nobody has mentioned, whom I feel is 'among the Greats", if not the most versatile of the greats and that is Mattias IA Eklundh.
If you haven't heard of this guy then I suggest you go and find either his band's stuff, ie. Freak Kitchen or his solo stuff, ie. Freak Guitar This guy has changed the way I look at guitar playing.

Also I would like to mention a few others that are amazing:
Neil Zaza
Porty
Alessandro Benvenuti
Joe Stump
Michael Lee Firkins
Herman Lee (DragonForce)
Katsu Ohta
Tore Ostby

Truthfully speaking, I think there should be a list of categories that we can then place these giutarists into. Categories like Shredding, Blues, Phrasing and such. Sometimes a guy can shred, but then you get a guy who creates fantastic phrases, who in my mind is as great a guitarist in his way. Guys like David Gilmour, Glen Tipton (shreds and phrases), Adrian Smith...the list goes on...so I think we should start a new thread, with categories. This way I'm sure people can discover new guitarist in the field that they enjoy most!
