I have to confess, I never knew Charlie Hunter till I saw that concert. But I am sold. I was going to buy his album "Friends Seen & Unseen" (performed by the Trio), because his Sax player and the drummer were awesome during the live performance.

Not that Charlie Hunter is my favorite artist or something like that, but it was something new and such great music.

Best Rock guitarist ever? Jimi.
Eric Clapton on "Derek & the Dominoes In Concert" has some masterful playing.
Best I ever saw up close was Roy Buchanan.

:( No one is mentioning Jimmy Paige or Johnny Greenwood. Personally Steve Vai is my favorite simple cause he puts so much raw emotion into his expression. Too me music is all about the emotion. Johnny Greenwood is also a very under apreciated artist who is amazingly original and creative. Jimmy Paige is just the 5h17.

Same here. When I was in Cali, kbaim gave me a CD of his. Awesome stuff. But, I must add a new one to my list.

After the show on April 9, Steve Morse is one of my favorites. I never really listened to him before......where have I been? Simply awesome.

Tommy emmanuel has an excellent DVD out called Live at the Sheldon.

Excellent. Just him and an acoustic. I ordered it off his website. Well worth the $40 (which seemed high before I watched it! Not after though.)

To me all the people mentioned are great. But i think we can only define greatness to what our ears deem as great to us as indivivduals.

Here it Goes.

Danny Gatton
SRV
Hendrix
Beck
Page

If you want to get out of the whole guitar only thing. Listen to some Jazz horn players like:

John Coltrane
Wayne shorter
Charlie Parker
Miles Davis

The list can go on. Listening to alot of these guys has helps ya get out of the normal patterns on the guitar. ;)

Eddie Van Halen is easily the best guitar player ever. The tricks that he brought to the table were unheard of at the time and he has inspired so many people its no doubt that he is the best. Here's my list
1. Eddie Van Halen
2. Eric Johnson
3. Phil Keaggy
4. Alex Lifeson
5. Jimi Hendrix
6. Eric Clapton
7. Randy Rhoads
8. Steve Morse
9. Jimmy Page
10. Chet Atkins

Best guitarist?

Many of my favorite guitar players were already mentioned (David Gilmour, John Petrucci, Alex Lifeson, Eric Clapton, Steve Morse, Steve Rothery and a few others). There used to be a guy named Alvin Lee (10 Years After) that was really amazing. Whatever happended to him.
