Reason i am wondering is that i would like to order either a Luke or a Petrucci Growing up Steve Lukather was a big influence on me and if he had a hand in design then it should be the best of both worlds (Strat meets EBMM) but when i start looking at all the people who own Petrucci's it makes me wonder if his series is the best.....any Thoughts.

the luke and the petrucci are different in almost every way. probably the only things they have in common is that they both have 6 strings and are made of wood :)

some things for you that i think you should consider: do some research about neck radii, and work out which (luke or jp) you think you'd be more comfortable as both guitars are very different in this respect

same goes for the depth of the neck, and the shape of the underside of the neck

before buying a petrucci, make sure you're satisfied with the neck pickup on a 24 fret guitar, pushing the neck back that extra inch to make room for the extra frets makes a huge different in the tone.
and likewise with the luke, make sure a single pickup in the neck position is ballsy enough for you (it might not be)

and also give the active EMG pickups (luke) a good go to see if theyre right for you

also the JPs are made of basswood, which some people bitch and moan about, so you should look into that as well. however if youre looking at a BFR petrucci its a totally different story :)
regular lukes (non-BFR) are made of alder, which in my opinion is one of the 'safest' woods to go for if you dont know your tonewoods, since everyone seems to like alder to some degree.

All the musicman range are great guitars and are good in their own way for different styles.
The JP models are great for all types of rock/metal etc.

It just came down to I love lukes. And I always love picking one up. I compare it to the first time you get to 2nd base.

And while for me the other EB guitars are all fine instruments, Im most inspired by everything about the Luke.

But people look for different things in guitars and have different sounds in their head how they want it to sound so only spending time (lots of time) with several can you find the one that feels made for you.

BTW I just gave away a '76 strat with emg's (which i put in because of the luke tone but still hated the strat neck and never played it) to a local guy who tells me he LOVES it.

Weird, as I didn't even keep the thing in the same closet as my LUKES! :cool:

:cool: Amen to that BP.
I love the tone from my JP6, my silo and ASS are great but donot compare to the tone i get from the JP (for my playing that is). And JP has been using basswood from the early days when he used 'that other brand' so it cant be that bad if he stuck with it until the BFR's.

I tried and had almost every model, AL, Silo Spec, Axis SS, Axis, Luke, JP6, JP7, BFR JP6, Morse..

that was directed at me no doubt

i didnt say basswood was bad, i said some people dont like it, so i think its more than justifying to advise the guy to take this into account before buying a petrucci guitar. we'd hate for him to be the newest member of the 'basswood flame', post-purchase wouldnt we?
