OK, I know those guys Im addresing now are gonna jump on me like hungry wolves, but still I gotta ask this...I often see that certain members lists their basses underneath their posts, and some of those guys having 3-5 musicman basses, sometime only difference being HH,HS,maple or rosewood, and ofcourse colour. Isnt that---at least---unnecessary? I know, again, that this is EB forum, and being huge fan of his basses (always been and will!!!), having SR5 myself, Im not against one or two musicmans, but unless youre EB endorser and they send you dozens, why not have different good basses for different sounds,feel, and look? Are you serious about your playing or only about your collecting?

why not have 5? That's what a collector does, collects. We're pretty loyal fans to these instruments.

I play EBMM Basses exclusively for a couple reasons.
1. 'cause they all have a neck and string spacing that feels like a bass neck should.
2. they are built like tanks.
3. You can get damn near any active tone with the different preamps, pickup configurations, and fretboard woods.
4. They ALWAYS stay in tune...even straight outta the case shipped to korea! no sh!t.
5. they are damn sexy.
6. all my other basses have crapped out on me, rather it be during rehearsals or gigs. And I don't stand for that sh!t.
7. I heard they get you chicks!
I know as a bass player there are certain basses that we are expected to have in our arsenal...which shall remain nameless. But for me, I don't like the feel those basses <cough> j/p basses <cough>
When I buy another one, it always is a little different that my others. Like you said, HH/HS/H/Piezo, maple/rosewood, fretted/fretless, bongo/sterling/'ray, 4/5string. Each one gives you a little more or a little less depending on your needs.
As for those dudes with 20 sparkles, well. They've been smoking the good stuff.
For me, I collect them to play them and variety is a good thing when you play salsa in the morning, pop and country in the afternoon, and southern'rock-jazz'fusion at night.

As maddog said I don't need 3 basses. It is useful though. I have a fretless for a different sound, and having 2 fretted basses means I have a backup bass on gigs if anything goes wrong with the other. I shall be getting a 5er in the New Year too, again to bring a bit more versatility to my playing.

I had 4 of the same, now three (3) SR4 single pups with rosewood.
The single pup Ray is my all-time favorite but having 3-4 was never planned.
I've had/tried others . . .in fact, a pick+nickel-rounds+P-bass+tube amp+
10" cones is one of my favorite tones. However, a P next to a Ray hanging
on my wall collects dust . . same for a J, Ric, Spector, etc.
It may be silly owning more than one of the same bass with same configuration
but I can't help myself

I play both bass and guitar. I have 3 JP's and 3 Bongos with a 30th Ray on the way....why? Addicted definitely. But again, why? Because I can....pluse each guitar/bass are in different tunings and when I am on stage...I don't have time to re-tune my bass. I just swap them out. Same with the guitars. I get them set up to a certain tuning and leave it. I own only one other guitar (given to me by my wife 15 years ago...non EBMM), but the rest of my guitars and basses are the best...EBMM.

At the end of the day, no one needs to own more than one bass to get gigs as a bass player. There isn't an electric bass made today that can't be used for any and all performance/recording needs. There are only twelve notes, folks. Sure, some may do it better than others, but any working bass will finish a gig.
After that, it all comes down to specialization and want and, at that point, you bring preference into it, and all bets are off.

"I want five fretted Musicman Stingray 5s with maple fretboards in 5 different pretty colors," is just as valid as "Well, I needed this one so it could be tuned ABCDE so I can play the new, hip Phillip Glass composition that's all the rage with the kids today without retuning."

As Ive said a million times none of us own anything.....If keeping the company of 5 basses , 10 slide whistles, 50 red headed women with amnesia whilst we are on this planet makes you happy then its not for me to judge.
