Why is my Axis so heavy?

I just received my Axis from MF; a beautiful trans red with a bird’s eyes maple neck. This is my first Music Man guitar, but the second one they send me since the first one had intonation problems. I told them to send me another guitar with exactly the same specs. For some reason the second one feels considerably heavier. That was a turn off, since that’s the reason I never liked Gibson Les Pauls. I know that the average weight for an Axis is 7 pounds and 4 ounces (varies slightly); mine weights about 7 lbs, 8 oz. I wonder if they sent me one with a mahogany tone block or a big block tremolo upgrade. I would like to hear other Axis owners experience regarding weight.

Post pics ! It is an Axis, right? Not a Super Sport? It won't have a tone block unless it's a BFR.

4 ounces extra is less than 4%, which doesn't strike me as a lot. Wood density can vary within a log, from tree to tree at a single logging site and from one logging site to another. That two otherwise identical guitars may not weigh the same is perfectly normal.

Jeez my pdn mahogany must weight a ton or either I'm a hulk. All kidding aside yes please post pics for evaluation. I think they will keep sending you guitars until you are satisfied. MF has done guitar checks for me so maybe you could call and get them to weigh the guitars for you. Guitar weights always confuse me... For some reason the reflex which is weight relieved feels lighter to me than an axis, but according to the mm website it's not.

All of my old Axis guitars are very light, 7 lbs and under. Some of the newer ones I have played are often a bit heavier.

My 96 Axis feels very light compared to my 00 Axis and they weigh almost the same. I wouldn't be worried about it as long as it plays and sounds good. You get used to the weight.

All of my Axis guitars vary in weight......My Pink seems extremely lighter....However, I love them all....like a father loves all of his children...even though they are all slightly different....I hope it works out for you!

Guitars are made of wood, wood is a natural product and no two trees are alike...following that logic then no two guitars will be exactly alike in either weight, looks or tone.

If it was several pounds heavier than the average I would be concerned but 4 ounces? C'mon!

i only can compare it with my Y2Ds...so here we go:
the purple sunset is the heaviest guitar i own! it´s much heavier as my de-purple burst Y2D (both with trem) - the tobacco burst hardtail is nearly as heavy as the de-purple burst - so the result is, that the de-purple burst is the winner in light-weight, because the tremolo adds a bit of weight to it.

on the other hand, the purple sunset sounds totally different from the rest - don´t get me wrong, it´s still a Y2D, but it has less mid-range (more like a scooped sound) coming from the guitar itself.
the de-purple and the hardtail is nearly the same in sound.

the de-purple burst and the purple sunset are made within one month - so you can´t even say, that the DOB or the year they are made has influences on the weight or sound of the guitars.

the bottom line is here is:
they are all made of wood, and no tree is like the other tree, that´s why the sound a bit different and they have different weights.

4 ounces is more or less the weight of a guitar strap (4 ounces = 112 grams ... I am always surprised that people from US still use Imperial units, perhaps a nostalgia for the time when USA was a British colony !).
Under 8 pounds (3.6 kg !) you have a light guitar.

Tonechaser, I got the translucent red as well back in March. Best guitar I have ever owned. The neck is beautiful, lots of birds eye with a sprinkle of flame. A real stunner! Enjoy.

As for your inquiry, mine is very light. I haven't weighed it, but I do recall thinking how light it was when I pulled it out of the case for the first time.

you are right, 112g isn't much, but you'll notice ist on a guitar right away.
i have changed the sustainerblocks on a few of my trem. guitars and this makes a difference from about 100g, but the guitars felt much heavier as the Big Block were installed.

I have a 1999 axis sport,mm90 with trem,rosewood..weighs a lot more than my other musicmen..has a twangier sound,too..still a jewell......just a piece of wood that mother nature made heavier.. a really nice sounding guitar,and it*s not anywhere near Les Paul weight.The guitar has an opaque fire engine red paint job,and the grain isn*t visible..maybe there are some heavy knots[closed]...they do add weight.
