It is the limitation of existing switching and wiring. When we make the first position parrallel the remaining 4 positions dont sound as good as if we start with position one is series.
We are close to a solution and expect the new wiring/switch to make its debut in the SR5 20th Anniversary. From there we will make the new combo that starts with parrallel then series and then 3 other great combos

Wow, this should be interesting! This and possible maple tops makes it a sure buy now. Going to have to figure out how to swing the LE too if I can.

I'm happy anyway because I love the Series sound.
The Sterling HS I played sounded incredible in all positions, I thought.
I just need money~! ....dreaming of a SR5 HS.

Great news on the expanded wiring features and an alnico pickup! I'm not playing 5ers much right now but the 20th Ray5 is sounding like a must have.
I really love the tone of my HH Sterling, series sounds great.

Re. Two pickup bass switching;
This COULD be a very confusing subject. BP did an excellent job of summing it up, and I'll shed a bit of technical light on the issue here:
SR5 and Sterling- The preamps for these basses have 2 (differential) inputs. This is how we achieve the "series" sounds. There are 3 connections to these inputs, one for each input , and ground. There are 4 pickup coils, each has two conections. Soooooooo, that makes 11 potential points to be connected. The 5 way switch has 4 poles, and this becomes the limiting factor.
We tried every possible humbucking combination of coils, and configured the switch to provide the best 5 possible combinations. We tried all parallel combinations, and the bridge pickup sound was great (of course), but the series mode of all other combinations was preferred. Wiring the switch for series and parallel of the bridge pickup limited the remaining 3 position possibilities.
I am continuing to search for a way to do series and parallel, and a switch with capability to handle the task.

Question: Can the 20th SR5 be had w/ HH or HS configurations??
Man, this kind of stuff is killing me, like a kid on Christmas morning. Hopefully this will come true today.
Ahhh, crap! Guess I know what will soon be maxing my credit card out again. That's been the only thing holding me back from an SR5 HH. I just don't like position 1 series sound, and of course can't get the parallel sound. Looks like things are about to change. Cool. If the 20th is offered in HH... well, there's my next bass.

I think it sounds good with both pups in paralell, the regular series bridge pup sound is good and punchy, but for slapping i missed the paralell sound, so i changed it to paralell myself.
it's not a "do it yourself" kind of thing but since i know a little bit about electronics, i decided it was worth trying, and i'm glad i did.
I'm not encouraging anybody to do it, you'll void your warranty, and could ruin the preamp which IMO cannot be replaced by any other preamp on the market, as far as sound.
The new wiring for the 20th SR5 sounds very interesting, i'm looking forward for that bass to come out.
