Like him or hate him he has made it huge for himself (which is something most of us here can't claim).Huge and playing a MusicMan ... now that is a good thing.

I think he's a great musician, but I'm not as impressed of him as a bass player.
He has made some fantastic music and really knows how to do what the fans expect. I like Kiss' music and a lot of other people do too. But I have never seen him play without a pick, I haven't seen him play something that is even close to impressive (playing neither fast, nor accurate or anything else) and according to my bass teacher, Kiss has been so far from playing tight in studio that they had problems recording a song ...

But I guess I have to accept him as a bass player, after all, he uses a Music Man! :D

Chris Squier and Justin Chancellor suck too. Danged pick users.

Come on fellas. Show some respect around here. WE, as a forum, are better than that.

Gene is gene. Simple as that. Not the best yet not the worst. Still made a living doing what we all dream about doing. He is a VERY intelligent person and is a marketing genius. KISS has and will always be one of the biggest bands ever. Whether we like them or not...that is a fact. I could care less if they are not the best musicians....they played some fun music and put on a show that everyone in the industry has been envious of.

I am not a huge Kiss fan....nor a big fan of Gene...but I respect the man.

Gene is the man, does what he does, far, far worse players than him, pick or otherwise, infact to that end, take a leaf out of John Entwistle's book, use all options at your disposal, pick, fingers or combination, never ever stunt your own playing, so using a pick, yeah, good enough for the greatest, good enough for the latest. Also Gene playing a EBMM, well we can't blame him for that one can we.

I have been a big KISS fan since 1976 and once my wife went to one of their concerts she was hooked :D

We have seen them together 4 times and I had seen them about 5 times prior to that. Gene is better and worst than other bass players, just like all of us. He lays down a solid line and has made it beyond what many have tried to do.

Check out 100,000 years from the Alive! album. That is a cool bass line. Is it super flash, no, but still a cool and grooving bass line.

As for pick vs slap vs fingers vs tapping, why limit your options? If it makes the song come to fruition than that's what it takes.

Anyway, Gene is +1

Problem is that many musicians (or so-called) judge Gene based on his bass "solos" without realizing that he's not trying to display any kind of dazzling musicianship but just a show for crowd entertainment. To me, Gene Simmons is a more than competent bassist who can create and play terrific basslines while singing. Here's the example I always mention (and enjoy so much):

So much that I covered it with my ABG (and I'd sing it as well if I had a nice voice):

Gene has made more money than all of us combined, and probably got laid more than us too. He's a solid player too, but no virtuoso. I respect that.

Seriously...let's show some respect. Gene is the reason why some ofthe best players picked up the bass to begin with. Good on him.

I can't believe on this very forum I have to say this.

I am done here. Seriously.

Well said Koogie!

I firmly believe that you should only be allowed to criticise an artist on the web when you have sold more records than that artist :)
That would cut down probably half the posters on talkbass....

Gene may not be the best bass player in the world (and probably would not claim to be)!, but I'd rather listen to a KISS record than 90% of the 'virtuoso' bass players who slate players such as Gene Simmons, KISS are all about the fun, the larger than life characters , the rock and roll, and the entertainment.

While Gene's style isn't to my taste, if his management called me and asked if I could fill in for him, I'd do it in a heartbeat. He may not be a Jaco or Clarke or whoever you find to be your bass hero, I'd still trade places with him anyday. Where's my old pick...

I take my hat off to anyone who can sing and play at the same time.

Never got the hang of it because a) I can barely play bass and b) I can't sing at all so c) doing both a) and b) at the same time leads to a result that is less than the sum of the parts a) and b), as aforementioned
