Rule of thumb for a PA or bass rig is to use a head or power amp that is rated 1.5-2x the RMS rating of the cab it's driving. That way, you have headroom to spare, and should never run the risk of clipping your amp and sending a square signal to the cabinet.

This is great information to have!

Thanks guys!

And you haven't even posed the question, "Dare I?". :D

If it wasn't for the fact that I'm ready to order a new Ray (TB w/MHS; H), I'd yell "UNCLE!!"

Reallistically speaking, I may go the GK 1001RB-II route; 700w @ 4ohms run through two Ampeg 1x15's should sound pretty sweet!

GK'll be nice. Shoot, I can't talk. I'm still playing on my little ampeg BA112. Looking to step up to a larger combo or small GK rig one of these days but the man known as Noel Munee is holdin' me down. I heard GK is putting out a 410 that might finally do me in tho'.

That was a setup btw. ;) You were supposed to say "Dare I?" and I was gonna reply "Dare! Dare!" Shades of Cleavon Little in Blazing Saddles. Oh well, the moment came and went. Sometimes you seize the laughs and other times you just seize. Yes, I'm feeling a little giddy tonight :D

Now you're talking James! You won't be dissapointed with the 1001RBII. It can do super clean and if you want some grit, the boost control is pure goodness. GK is also coming out with a Tube Pre and a Tube/SS Hybrid amp..........

Absolutely! The Ampeg heads that I considered for an upgrade were both too expensive for my budget, and the amp power-to-speaker RMS handling ratio would have been damn-near 3:1. Which would obviously blow the speakers, defeating the whole purpose in the first place.

With the 1001RB-II, I can get the proper power rating, keep it in my budget, and still be able to cough up 1/2 down for my new 'Ray.

After I sell off my two GK cabs, I'm going to buy another Ampeg SVT-15E to pair up with the one I already have. 400w @ 4ohms RMS when paired up, and the 1001RB-II is rated 700w @ 4ohms; plenty of headroom.

Not necessarily. If I read this correctly, I understand you will have two Ampeg 8 ohm cabs, that are each rated at 400w RMS. When you connect both of these to the amp you will get a 4 ohm load, which will draw 700w from the amp as you stated. However, that 700w will be split between the two cabs, so the most each cab will see is 350w. Having said that, I doubt you're going to be in danger of cooking your cabs in that configuration (unless you need to run the amp on "10" in order to hear yourself), but I thought I should clarify the math for you.
