hey bro i agree.....
.........but when u consider a songwriter writes about experiences ..........."ROOM FOR SQAURES" is just that and if you listen to the playing on that album it's amazing ...well beyond his years at that time...........the lyrics YES are about the usual teenage stuff because he WAS a teenager when he wrote that stuff BUT again listen to the guitar work UNREAL STUFF he is an amazing Talent and i for 1 am not ashamed to stand tall and proclaim it hahahaha I LIKE JOHN MAYER!!!!! and when my band played "body is a wonderland " the house went nuts !!! and when the kids would come into the store and here me playing it on the acoustic they would always come over and pic my brain as to how i was gettin that "SOUND" hahaha

The guitar work on "why Geogia why" sucked me right in - bought the CD that day.

yeah sure did lol. i would like to add that yes ed was out of his league in that jam not by skill but style. i heard several people tell me he just didnt fit in and thats no ones fault just style. i know albert is a kpicker and steve i dont know much about but what very little i have heard kinda vai like. to say he was outclassed i dont think so as he has made such a impact on guitar no one can match him almost the walter payton or jordon of guitar. but to say he cant paly covers should watch the jason becker charity he did with luke and also the city of hope. sorry to go off just wanted to add. thanks bp again for sharring some neat storys.

J I have the tape and was the bass player that night..he did not have a good night and it is funny how many people were at that gig now...I give evh credit for doing the gig and stepping out of his comfort zone.

I think one of his coolest solos is the one he did for "Beat It."
I am not a die hard EVH fan - I own one vinyl album by him which has "Jump" = just because it was always on the car radio when I was having a blast in St Louis in 83-84.
His solos on Beat it and Jump were like nothing else that had been heard commercially in those days - I tip my hat to him as he played in a style that "I" had never heard before.

I'm heavy into John Mayer, but what's frustrating about the guy's music is that he can wrap his thumb around the neck and fret the A-string  , while playing a complicated form with his fingers. I can barely reach the A-string with my thumb, much less make the rest of my left hand useful at the same time. Try playing the first chord change in "Why Georgia", and you'll see.

wow that was great stories Big Poppa!

man..I'm trying to dig old threads to see what i've missed.. ..i missed Lots of cool things!!

I dunno if this thread is the right place for me to tell a little story, i just want to share some good stuff though..

here's a lil story about me.. I always Steve Lukather's fan since i was very young..I was listened to his music on the radio when I was about 13 years old.."lonely beat of my heart" really got me into his music.. to bad that I couldn't afford to get his album at that time.

Fortunately my brother took me to the Radio station where his buddy works.. infact he's the man who played Steve's song on the Radio.. i'm very lucky that he let me to hear the whole album at his office !! .. man to me that's very sweet moment of my life.

Then after about 12 years later ..Toto played in Jakarta for the second time for their ASIA Tour, Thank God that I was able to see Luke live on stage for the very first time!! . After the show my buddies and me hang out at the nearest bar / hotel to chill out, and you know what? I met Luke there..he just sit and drink his fav drinks..oh man..I was very nervous at that time, but hey man I must at least say hello to my hero! .. then I asked him.."Excuse me Sir..are you Steve Lukather?!" and he said "Yeah Man ,how are you? "...Man i had a blast at that time. And then He buy me a drink and talk a lil bit and finally I asked him how to play like him...he just fist his hand and put it on his chest..and then he said "man ..it's all yours ..take it bro" and he put his fist to my chest.."it's all yours man.. just play by heart bro".. that's amazing..he's so cool and very humble man..

Thanks Luke.. thanks for the inspiration and your music. God Bless you and your family.

Regards,

Ponch

Great story Ponch,

Luke's right though, just play from the heart.

I was actually there in Jakarta for that tour, and met Luke for the first time, me and a mate flew to Jakarta to catch Toto. and ended up meeting Luke and David Paich, and both were very cool cats.

I'm assuming it was the same time, he has the same clothes on in my photos, l believe it was Febuary 2004.

And l was very fortunate to meet them again when they come to Aus a couple of months back.

scott, those pics are great, the green luke is excellent!

Oh yeah, it looked sh!thot on stage, with the lights on it.

Well l might as well share my story of how l met Toto in Sydney this year.

Well to start off with, we just happened to be staying at the same hotel as them, but the first one l met was Mike, and l was just walking the street of Sydney just checking it out, l'm about a block away from our hotel, l stop at a car park driveway to let some cars go by, and this guy stops next to me, on my right, l look at him and l realize it's Mike Porcaro, and l'm like a little freakin' school girl "like, oh my god, you're Mike Porcaro" etc etc, l had a chat with him for a minute or so, got an autograph, but he seemed like he wanted just to chill, and l didn't want to hold him back.

Well l went back to my hotel room, told my mates what happened, and so we decided to go down stairs again, and go have a beer, my mate ended up meeting Mike again, and as we were walking to the bar, we see Greg walk out of the lifts, so l walk up to him and start chatting with him, got an autograph and some pics.

So we go have a beer, we are sitting there just chilling, until all of a sudden see the one and only Luke, i say to my mate "holy sh!t, there's Luke, l jump up and go introduce myself, and he said he remembers us from the Melbourne show, as we were front row and it's hard not to forget me, hehe. I start chatting with Luke, got some pics and autographs, but by this time some people had gather and told him l'll leave him be and let him do what he had to do (which was some interviews), and by this time, Simon Phillips comes walking out the lifts, l start chatting to him about music, us fans and whatnot, once again got some pics and autographs. By this time, there were quite a few fans around, l got Bobbys autograph, and l just stood back, but Greg and Tony where just standing by themselves, l walk up to them and start chatting with both of them, we talked about Gregs Jerry Lewis impersonation, and l was saying l was a huge Jerry Lewis fan and his impersonation was spot on, and l was chatting to Tony Spinner about music and just everyday things, there were really great guys, and got a group shot of me, greg, tony and my mate.

We saw Luke later on just before it was show time and got the typical Luke greeting "Hey how ya going cats?"

It was a great day/night/weekend, Toto were fantastic both musically and personnally.

I hope people enjoy my story.

Scott.

you mustve had the night of your life scott, lucky SOB!

It was an even better day when l was in Jakarta, cause no one knew who Luke was, so we'd be sitting there having lunch and Luke walked up and started chatting with us and just shoot the sh!t.

But yeah it was great to see them here in Melbourne and Sydney, they could of played multiple nights at each venue and they all would of been sold out, or damn close to it.

And l convert a few mates to massive Toto fans, one mate who only knew Africa, rosanna, hold the line etc, just heard the opening "falling in between", and Bobby come in with his huge vocals and he was hooked, he's a mad Toto fan now, he wanted to come to Sydney with us.
