Stitch, Congratulations and welcome! Your new-to-you bass was completed on May 9th, 2001.

Dan

Thank you Dan! I guess that on the next month I will have to buy a present to my new StingRay... for its sixth birthday, of course! :D

Knowing the Italian stores, the StingRays don't sell too fast due to price. It may even be brand new, not a new-to-him. :D Just saying. Stitch, be sure to post pictures of your bass in this thread:

Saxnbass, you're right! I have dreamed about a StingRay for years, but for me it always costed too much... the stores costantly keep a high price on MusicMan basses... but now the time was right, I found a great deal and now its miiiiiine!! UHAUAHUAHAUHAU... O.ò ... stop me please!
I can assure you, the bass I bought today has never been played from anyone. Guess what, I had to strip away the plastic covering from the... uhm... I don't know the english word, sorry.... well, the plastic that covers the stingray body

Now it's time to post some pictures :D

Chris, this one's practically vintage. 10/13/87 is the production date of your bass. The records show it to be a 2-band EQ in Natural Ash. The pickup would be a standard StingRay "same as it ever was" and the neck maple with a rosewood fretboard. Nice!

Cheers,

Dan

Thanks Dan - is it possible for you to clear something up for me. It this the only DD Ray in HS shipped to the UK? I am extremely pleased with it and will be posting pics when the weather clears up.

Yes, the best information I can find indicates that this was the only one shipped of its kind to the UK, at least through proper means. ;)

Original 79 StingRay

Hi, am the current and original owner of StingRay bass serial number B015910; I purchased the bass new in 1980 (I believe) at Gracin's Music in Hempstead, NY (at the age of 16, with the paper route money I'd saved up - about $450 with gig bag, I think). It was originally natural w/ maple board but I had it refinished white a few years later. Do you have any add'l build info on the bass..?
Thanks, Danny

Ernest, congrats on your new bass! This one left the factory on 12/19/06. It was shipped to The Perfect Bass in Baton Rouge, LA. Sweet!

Danny, we have very little info on pre-EB StingRays. Rod Trussbroken's website is an excellent source for all things Music Man, but particularly pre-EB stuff as he has put a lot of time in researching about his favorite instruments (was that enough of a plug, Gav? :D ). Here is the website: Home - Musicmanbass.org, Musicman Bass.org, Musicman Bass

Official disclaimer: "This website is not maintained, monitored, nor officially endorsed by Ernie Ball Music Man Company or its employees" Anyway - have fun! ;)

Gav, you want to weigh in here?

Cory, your lovely Trans Green StingRay 5 was completed on 6/29/99 and was originally shipped to mega-dealer Royal Music in Brooklyn, New York. Cool color - I used to have one in this color but I sold it to a buddy who fell in love with it. :D

Hey Danny.

Records of Pre-EB Bass serials don't exist.

A given serial number can usually give an idea as to vintage but serials aren't necessarily in chronological order.

All that can be said at this stage is that your Bass is probably a 1979 or 1980.

Other features of the instrument may be helpful. For example, a 4 bolt neck may suggest 1980 rather than 1979. Similarly, a top-load bridge (strings don't go through the body) may suggest 1980 rather than 1979. However, the 3 bolt neck and and string-through-body bridge extended into 1980 also.

Unfortunately, the only way to accurately date your Bass is to remove the neck in order to view the dates on both the neck heel and in the body pocket.

If you choose to remove the neck then I strongly suggest you have a luthier do it for you as you may damage the instrument.
