Honestly, I can understand why. As much as I enjoy the SSS, considering I play top 40s music with my band, the HSS is far more suitable for generic playing. Simply because of the bridge humbucker. For SSS, mainly blues and country people use it, or Hendrix fans.:p The HSS is more suitable as most people use humbucker tones in the bridge, and single coil tones in the neck.

Oh yeah, I could definitely understand the greater versatility of the HSS for a main gigging ax.

But (and I hope I don't get my knuckles whacked for saying this), since changing the pups in my SSS, I'm believing that there's more Strat players that can be won over to the light if MM rethinks the Silo Special SSS pup choice. I'm talking about buying right off the rack cuz it slays their strat flat out on the dime. The stock SSS's sound good, but imo, not really stratesque enough to win die-hard strat players.

I consider my rosewood board HSS (with a Breed HB and stock SS) my dark and powerful guitar, and my maple board SSS (with Fralin blues specials) my trusy Strat sounding guitar. You prolly member when I was wanting that strat "clang" from my SSS? Brother, it's got it now and it's my numbero uno.

I hear you brutha!!! I totally agree with that. The construction and setup are far superior especially in their price ranges. But them DiMarzios are a no no...:(

Any clips?

P.S. This was done with my White Silo Spec and Tonerider Pickups

Excuse the sloppy playing...

No clips, hardly any recording gear. Currently testing a new amp/tubes/speakers. Maybe once I get that sorted. I'm inhibited to post clips, I'll admit. I'm mainly interested in clean or slightly over driven tube tones. Pods and such don't move me to play. My Line 6 lasted 2 days.

That's the problem with PODs. recording a nice slightly overdriven tone which isn't gritty is really hard. Trying to capture it accurately with dynamics and a good tone is one of the hardest things I've ever tried to do. And I'm still trying.:D

Ok ok... we're digressing.:D

Hey Lionel,
yupp - just what you said!
Even with Guitar-Rig 3 (Native Instruments), the dynamics and the slightly overdriven/breaking up sounds just don't sound right.
...in comes the ZOOM H2 pocket recorder I bought last night. I'm desperate to test it this weekend at home. It's said to quite well capture room ambience as well...
I'm giving my pearl lavender SSS Silo Special (the Kinman Traditional MK2 PU-set in it - we talked about that...) a go with this for a try. Let's see what it does...
Cheers

Realted question: Is the AL MM90 comparable to these SSS guitars? Can you get strat sounds out of it?

Heh... I have the H2... Oddly enough, it captured the drums very well. The guitars were too soft, vox was muffled, and bass was almost non-existent.

The best bit? The recorder was NEXT to the MESA Cab I was using!!!!

I'm kind of late to the party on this one, but I really love my Silo Special SSS for the Hendrix and Gilmour tones. I've always been fine with the stock DiMarzio single coils; I guess I spent too many years with a 1979 Fender and am used to Fender pickups from that era.

One thing I did recently to get a bit more "Stratty" was move from a Rivera Clubster 25 amp to one of the new Fender '65 Princeton Reverb reissues and a Fulltone Full-Drive 2 for overdrive. If I were to use a FuzzFace I would definitely be in Hendrix heaven.

1979 era does describe the stock SSS sound quite well, imo.

Hey, John, how are you liking the 65 Princeton RI? Have you compared it with an original? Does the 10" speaker cut it?

I bought my Silhouette Special on line without ever playing one before. Best musical purchase I ever made. The guitar sounds awesome and plays even better. You really won't be sorry.

I don't think you should have to wait 3 or 4 months. There are plenty of on-line dealers that carry Silo Specs in stock. EB Customer Service helped me track down the color and version I wanted, I didn't have to wait at all.

Brilliant! I forgot that I did this before I bought my axis.

Calling them on monday!

I know that your question mostly pertained to neck profiles, but I think that there is something else you should also consider.
If I'm not mistaken, I believe you said you have an Axis, right?
See, I've spent most of my time playing guitars that didn't have any forearm bevel (not sure that's what you actually call it, but it's that smoothed out cutaway where your picking hand/arms sits on a guitar). I guess this would be like playing your Axis.
I do not own a real MM Silo Special, but I do own an OLP Silo Spec. (I know, not the same in terms of quality, components, etc.). Now this guitar is one of the nicest guitars I've ever played in terms of comfort........................sitting down.
I mean, it's comfortable playing standing up too, but it was a little bit of a pain for me to get adjusted playing it standing up due to that bevel since I'd spent so much time playing guitars without this (think Axis, Morse).
Just more info. to keep in mind and to consider. It's just a time issue-thing, though. I mean, it's something you/we would get used to the more we played the axe standing up.
Re: necks....... I must be of the odd variety because small hands and all, I think that the axis necks, silo spec. necks, and petrucci necks are all awesome and extremely comfortable. Being different, they just inspire me to play different things. Go figure.

I'm only using it for home use, so the 10" speaker is fine. I had the 10" version of the Rivera Clubster 25, so I've been on 10" speakers since 2005 anyway.

I've never gotten to play a real blackface Princeton, so I really can't compare them. I think the only silverface Princeton I ever played through was a circa 1979-1981. All I remember about it was I liked the Music Man RD-50 112 better so bought it back then.

I did have a Deluxe Reverb RI a few years ago; I like the new Princeton RI much better than the Deluxe RI.
