His main for most of the last tour was his Tobacco Burst BFR. He didn't even use the Dargie at the show I saw them at, even when they played In the Presence of Enemies. I think the Dargie was just a backup to his main last tour. And that seemed to be his "A" rig. I think a Blackburst was his main for the "B" rig. And then the Black w/gold hardware seemed to become his main later on in the tour.

Before the BFR line came out, his MD jp6 was his main axe (for standard tunings anyway), and I even read an interview where he said it just played better than the other 20+ models he had. He just thought it felt better. But once the BFRs arrived, he never played it publicly again... :(

They use so many different tunings (E, Eb, D, Drop D, C, Bb bari, A bari, 7 string) that he can't have just one main guitar, though for a while he was using a couple of BlackBurst BFRs as his "main" axes.

I realize that, I guess I worded it poorly. I meant that over the last 10 years or so he seems to be less attached to one particular instrument than many other guitarists, but I guess that was mainly my perception as 24th's post indicates that he did have a favorite that was his main guitar for standard tunings.

I see what you mean. He does seem to change more frequently than other guitarists. Take Steve Morse for example. He's been playing #1 for a LONG time. Jimmy Page has his '59. There are many more.

It seems to me like JP thinks of his guitars as tools and if the current tool isn't working out, he'll switch it up to one that does work. He does the same thing with his guitar rigs. Each one is geared around the myriad of sounds he needs as DT progresses with their music. Systematic Chaos is a far cry from Images & Words and he's got to be able to do pretty much any song they've done. They change their set lists up almost nightly.

Yup, that's exactly what I was getting at, you worded it much better though. I have seen JP and DT over 40 times over the last 15 years and for some reason there wasn't really one guitar that stood out in my mind as having seen him play it over and over. Though I do vividly remember seeing him play the Music Man on the Scenes From A Memory world tour at the Roxy in Boston and thinking "hmm, I wonder if they make that lefty?"

But I think outside of tunings, JP doesn't switch up tones much. So I disagree that he has a "myriad" of tones, maybe sounds, but not tones. His tones from his guitars are pretty standard throughout his recording career. Listen to the remixed I&W tracks off of "Greatest Hit" in 2007 (gives a much clearer sound of the original tracks without such reverb and production) and you'll hear the guitar tones are generally the same as they are now. I think a lot of other guitarists, at least some of my other favorites, explore a lot more variety of tones from multiple instruments with different woods/pickups/brands/tunings/etc . But on the other hand, you have to hand it to JP for knowing what he likes and sticking with it.

to catch up the discussion of his gear, i asked JP back in 2006 during a clinic about his gear.
he did the clinic with one road king and one recto head, using a boss delay pedal an noise reduction. he sounded like he always sounds. the typical JP tone.
so i asked him: "john, if you can achieve your sound with only two pedals and the heads, so why do you need so much..." JP: "you mean crap? - because i love gear!"
and one other guys throw in: "and you don´t have to carry it" JP than was laughing.

i think he is a gear-junkie. and if i had the possiblity to get so many EBMM guitars and play every show a different one, i would do it. :)

Big Poppa confirmed it in a newer thread. This is "Dargie Delight 2" and he's gonna have some details soon.

JP is flipping over this guitar . It instantly went to the front of the pack.....The Dargie 2 will have a natural neck to the public ebony fretboard and different inlays then JPS as the "smoked mother of pearl could not be sourced in sufficient quantities or quality. check the thread I just posted.....
