1. Eric Johnson
2. Anything from Tones or Venus Isle
3. He uses 2x Amp set up (Dry/Wet combo) with his Marshall JCM800's. Or 2x Fender Twin Reverb. His entire set up is available at his website.

add me to the EJ list although it's 3 x amp setup ;) and vintage plexi Marshalls not JCM 800's. The twins are some times replaced with blackface deluxes because the twins are loud. I had the privilege of hanging with Eric and his crew for a day years ago. Life changing in terms of playing the guitar. Robben Ford and Larry are up there as well...

Steve Morse / best example: Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming + Guitar SOlo from Abandon live / Signature guitar, Peavey 5150

Brian May / best example: maybe "God save the queen" / Red Special, booster, AC30

Mark Knopfler / various ?!?!

Slash is also in my opinion one with the best tones

I believe he was using Randall at the time.

My guitar teacher worked with George as his sound tech for the Tooth and Nail and ULAK albums, even then he switched his gear around so much, but he did mention the Randall RG100ES (Before they were originally bought out) as one of his staple amps, the model that Dimebag used too.

I know, I know it's a Solid State amp and they get their fair share of crap for not being tube driven, but this one is special. Also happens to be my first amp head. :D

He's back to using Randall now, and has a signature series as well.

I'd throw in:

1) Steve Rothery (Marillion) - especially the late 80s material, stratty guitar into Marshalls and Roland JC-120. Misplaced Childhood and Clutching at Straws albums in particular.

2) Nick Barrett (Pendragon) - stratty guitar into Soldano amp. Some albums: The World, The Masquerade Overture, The Window of Life, Believe.

Both of these guys are great melodic soloists (a la Gilmour) who have covered a lot of ground stylistically over their careers. I would love to put an Albert Lee in their hands for a few weeks and see what it brings out of them musically.

Hahaha.

I still have the Randall RG100ES head and cabinet in the limited edition snakeskin I bought in 1987. Surprisingly good tones for a solid state head. Sits in the closet, though. An Engl will do that to a lot of amps. :D

Some of my favorite rhythm tones to listen to (in no particular order):

Dave Navarro/Jane's Addiction - Strays - True Nature, Wrong Girl, etc.
Dave Navarro/The Panic Channel
Alex Lifeson/RUSH - Hemispheres; Moving Pictures - Red Barchetta, YYZ
Ra - Duality - Fallen Angels, Every Little Thing She Does is Magic, Superman
Shinedown - Leave a Whisper - In Memory, Fly From the Inside; Us and Them
Dean DeLeo/STP - Core - Crackerman, Plush, Wicked Garden
John Petrucci/Dream Theater - Scenes From A Memory, Falling Into Infinity
Wilton/DeGarmo/Queensryche - Empire
John Frusciante/RHCP - Californication

Favorite lead tones:

John Petrucci - 6 Degrees - Glass Prison; Scenes - Overture 1928
Joe Bonamassa - Bloodline - whole album but Since You're Gone stands out (killer soloing here)
Eric Johnson - Ah Via Musicom - High Landrons, Righteous
Joe Satriani - Crystal Planet - A Train of Angels, Ceremony, Crystal Planet; The Extremist
Wilton/DeGarmo/Queensryche - Empire - Jet City Woman, Best I Can, Resistance, Della Brown

That's enough for now. :)

I guess I'll participate in the dead-thread revival...

Too many to list but DLR-era Eddie Van Halen one of my personal favorites - Fair Warning in particular.

There's a ton of great players with great tone out there but you don't hear bad players with great tone. It's all in the touch and attack and feel of the player.

for me, here's a good example of "tone is in the hands"

YouTube - Philip Sayce - Solo Guitar 02

I should have mentioned Phil... He's a good friend of mine, and yes great tone.
Hope this doesn't get back to him
