drum machines ... no substitute for a good drummer. but a great substitute for a bad one.

Or one that doesn't exist. I used to do a lot of home recording; a drum machine was one of my best friends!

(Don't tell my cousin, Owen Hale. He'd never forgive me. Google him and you'll see why. heh heh)

On a freighter, somewhere in the middle of the ocean? Probably yes.

If you have a MacBook with you, why not just use GarageBand?

This is an excellent ideal.

As a drummer and IT geek I can tell you the drum loops in Garage band are very good. Once you get the hang of it you can put together cool groove with a few fills in less than a minute. Much better than a drum machine in my opinion. The Microphone input on the MacBook is compatible with the Bass Hi-Impedance so with an 1/4" to 1/8" adapter you can plug directly into the MacBook and record yourself along with the Drum Groove. Its really a lot of fun and has helped my improve my playing (I'm not implying that anyone here needs to improve there playing except myself)

I used to have a Korg Electribe ER-1 - best drum machine money can buy my friend!

Although they do go for ridiculous money these days.

If you're using a computer, try FruityLoops or PropellerHead Reason. These work fantastically for me.

He's got some diesel engines that are banging out a beat. Probably louder than any drummer I've played with. :D

While i was still checking out some used drum computers on ebay to get rid of an old yamaha keyboard (which i only used because of its drum computer) i saw your post here.
Just plugged the macbook into my bass amp this morning and let go... wow! Very nice sounding drum tracks in garage band. Perfect for practicing.

Thanks for sharing this tip!

Hallo Günter, Grusse aus Frankfurt!

I love practicing with Garage Band. Once you get a little practice with it... its a lot of fun to walk into the an Apple store, find one of the Mac Pro's hooked up to speakers and lay down a cool track, and walk away leaving it playing. (At least it impresses the Apple store geeks  )

Hallo Matt, schönen Gruß aus dem Raum Aachen :)

I must admit, that Garageband also impressed myself (this morning). It seems that it's difficult -using the built-in loops- to produce tracks that are worse than the stuff that's played on some radio stations. Looking forward to this evening when i can practice with Garageband for the first time :)

The last time i played with a real band is nearly 30 years ago... i restarted playing bass by the end of 2009. So i'm kind of hungry :D

Have a nice weekend.

Hey cool! Then there are 2 beginners here. I started seriously playing about 1 1/2 years ago. I played drums until our bass player moved away and we could not find a replacement.

Practicing to a loop is great as it helps you work on you timeing and with some of the instument loops there are slight variations that help you develop "feeling". Only bad thing about GB is it's really hard to create your own drum track without actualy playing a v-drum set.
