These look awesome, but I need clarification regarding the neck. The announcement flyer posted in post #1 of this thread says that the necks are "Figured roasted maple necks with gunstock oil and hand rubbed special wax blend finish". So am I correct in my understanding that these necks have a "satin" finish even though the necks have been roasted?

I am definitely looking for a Bongo 5Hp Unlined Fretless. I think this special edition will make for a very classy-looking fretless!!
Once I find out whether or not my local dealer can get one of these for me I will be pulling the trigger. I'm just waiting for a callback from them. I know for sure there is a dealer in another city in this province who can order them and deliver it to me. I'd prefer to buy it locally but...you gotta do what you gotta do.

Thanks...yeah, I checked that out. For some reason my local dealer is not on the premier dealer list but their sister store in Vancouver is listed. I figured the Vancouver store can order it for me and then ship it to one of their Calgary stores. ?? Seems simple enough but they're not sure so they're looking into it.
If not then my next more obvious choice is to order it from the dealer 3 hours north of here. That will cost more for shipping but...whatever.
One way or another we'll figure this out!!

Definitely satin, no gloss on this one. Same finish process as a production model.

L&M should be able to do interstore transfers. I know the local guys here have offered to have hanging stock brought in from other stores if I wanted to try stuff out. The ordering of the Bongo might have to be done through the Vancouver store, but they really should be able to transfer it to your location quickly enough.

I know, I had the neck/headstock of my BA 5-H refinished with a high gloss lacquer. But for one of these i'd prefer a factory gloss finish if at all possible.

Oh my, I LOVE the idea of a honey-burst 'hog Bongo, but why waste all that roasted toasted figured goodness with a pau ferro board and a matching headstock?? it. does. not. compute.
And how would the matching headstock work on a Bongo? I wouldn't think those killer lines would lend themselves to the task very easily.

I would think, on the Bongo, that the headstock would just match the back of the neck with the roasted goodness.
You can call your PDN dealer to get pricing. I called mine yesterday to get prices and pup options for the bongo and they're ready to take orders.

I think, judging from what I'd read from the previous round of roasted neck builds, the reason they put the Pau Ferro fretboard on there is to help brighten the tone. Apparently the roasting process darkens the tone somewhat. On the previous models there were some basses that were offered with a maple fretboard so you could see the roasting process on the fretboard itself. But most of the ones I'd seen were offered with an Ebony fretboard, to brighten the tone, and the dark Ebony looks great with the Black Sugar finish.
However, with the Honey burst finish on these guitars/basses I think the Pau Ferro will match the Honeyburst better than Ebony would and still achieve the effect of brightening the tone. Of course, with the Mahogany body I agree with having a trans finish and Honey burst looks great (IMO) so no complaints from me there.
I do wonder though about the matching headstock. I have one of the first round of roasted necked Bongo's and I love seeing the roasted maple on the front of the headstock so I'm not sure why they chose to go with matching the headstock to the body finish.
