Just looked at this thread now; and not to kind of change the subject, but...
I'm into bands like;
Dream Theater, Trivium, Chimaira, Nevermore, Racer X, Dokken, Extreme, Winger,
Brad Paisley, John Jorgenson, Vehemence, Megadeth, ect...
A lot more too. I know it doesn't answer the question directly, BUT there are a
few modern metal and some hard rock bands in there. You also learned a little more about me.
I was at the Dark Tranquillity show at the Key Club yesterday (it took place from around 8:30pm to around 1am).
Oblivion / Voices of Ruin (they introduced themselves and were billed as "Oblivion," but announced to the crowd that they changed their name to "Voices of Ruin" at the end of their set) was the local band opener. They played some pretty standard Thrash Metal with Death growls added, nothing worth mentioning besides the fact that they were a tight group and the Lead Guitar tone was lost in the mix. The front of the stage was littered with the friends and family of the band cheering them on. I believe they played a 20-30 minute set. I did not have a favorite song of the night.
Mutiny Within was first touring opener and the second best band of the night. Their sound during the gig was quite a bit different from their record, everything was "turned to 11" and the vocalist was much more aggressive than in the studio. It was almost like they were transforming themselves into a Death Metal band for the night to fit in with the other groups. I really liked them like this, much more than the "Dream Theater tribute band" vibe I got from their debut album. I believe they played a 20-30 minute set, with their best song of the night being:[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PS8t9jrccU"]Awake[/ame]
Threat Signal was the second touring opener and the third best band of the night. They were like Fear Factory without the clean vocals mixed with a simplified version Meshuggah, and with a sound so "cohesive" that you could not tell when one song ended and the other began. I am not entirely sure, but this band did seem to have a friends and family cheering section like Oblivion did. The Drummer also had this really strange trigger that would create a very bassy "boom" that would cause the venue to shake. On top of that, the guitarist was playing a stealth JP6! I believe they played a 40 minute set. I did not have a favorite song of the night.
Dark Tranquillity was the headliner and absolutely perfect. Everyone was right on the money and the tones were actually better than in the studio. Another highlight of the show was this one psychotic guy screaming his head off and running around like everyone should have been doing while in the presence of DT. I believe they played a 90-100 minute set. Their best song of the night was either:

It is rather hard to pick a best song of the night for DT, because they brought the house down every other song.
