Wow, we're into a big hijack here ...

Say what you will about Gates. The guy changed the world as we know it. You may not like the products or his business practices, but odds are you couldn't make it through the day w/o using one of his products. And he is a stellar example of applying entrepreunrial techniques to charitable funding, certainly a role model there. (And yeah, he does have bad hair.)

Windows, Mac, Linux, FreeBSD, whatever. There are pros and cons to every architecture and operating system. If you don't have a lot of experience, buy something that your co workers and friends have so they can help you out (and give you free software). I have a bunch of everything lying around and I still spend more time tinkering with them than I'd like :p

The question ought to be, is a mac really that much better for you? See, I'm not like beej - I'm not into tinkering with computers at all. I want them to work, not break down, and do the cool stuff I need it to do (word processing, internet surfing, music (itunes downloading, CD ripping, Garageband for recording and writing songs), home movies into DVDs, downloading digital photos, etc....) I also need it to be simple to use and intuitive to figure out. Therefore, I use a mac, becasue it meets all those criteria and does all those things simply and well.

S'ok folks... Billy owns your Macs, too! Follow the money trail.. ;)

Steve, yah it's funny that most people don't know that MicroSuck made a HUGE investment in APPLE years ago and they still have their tenitcals wrapped around the company, hence the reason that MAC will soon be able to run Blindows.

I applaude BP and EBM for making the move to Linux and showing that people and comapies can live without MicroSuck. I have 2 Blindows machines at home and have had OS related problems and swear that I will never buy another new version of Blindows ever again.

OpenOffice is a welcome replacement to MicroSuck Orrifice, what a piece of luggage!!

Sorry for the rant, back to unhijacking this thread. Glenn |B)

Guys as a 10 year vet with a global IT partner - macs are great.... in london or the US (other places too!)

In scotland - excluding design offices - PC's rule the roost - something to do with a unix divide!

Tim - you can crack open a mac - but there's no point, stick to PC's and balls!

I have used both Windows and Mac OS X operating systems in the past and like both. Bleeb it or not, I have very few problems with Windows - it seldom crashes on me. IMO, all it takes is decent mainenance to keep the Windows OS running smoothly. That said, I've been considering switching to some free, open-source OS like Linux just to try it out.

My computer rarely crashes either. Running Xp SP2. Anyhow, enough geekery - let talk about guitars!

Nah, that's not true. In the late 90's, there was a $150 million investment (for NON-VOTING stock), intended to reinforce confidence that there would continue to be a Mac version of Office, and to keep Apple afloat (and therefore theoretically keep MS out of monopoly trouble). I believe research would show that if MS still owns any of those shares, it's not many of them. Things have changed significanly since then...

More tangibly, if MS was calling the shots for Apple, do you really think Apple would be "allowed" to be as successful as they have with the iPod? MS doesn't just want a piece of the music/ video download pie, they want the PIE.

Um, I think as a shareholder they'd be quite pleased with the success of iPod. I tend to root for the companies whose stock I own.

Back on the subject, I don't know anyone who has worked for Gibson... but one of the area sales reps came to the store a few years ago and wanted me to carry their strings and accessories on consignment, and if I showed I could move their product, then I was possibly able to sell their amplifiers a year or two in the future. Needless to say, I wasn't really thrilled by the proposition.

The whole situation was funny to me because 50+ years ago we were the area dealer for Gibson. My great-uncle Bruno (who started the business in 1953) sold Gibson guitars as the high-end model. He still has and plays one of the first Gibsons to come through the store. Years later, when the store was thriving with 270+ guitar students a week, and Gibson forgot about the "little guy" who put them on the map, things got strange, and 50-200pc minimum yearly buy-ins became the requirement.

We sell EB strings, and don't have any Gibson products in the store of any kind whatsoever. No-one even asks us if we have it. There is a GC 2 miles down the road if they want that brand.

I'm not saying Gibson products are bad, I own a '67 Flying V and I love it for what it is. I just think that the golden years for that company have gone by, and it's time for the torch to be carried by someone else. I'm doing my best to help EB/MM be that someone.

I guess it's kind of like the term "Cadillac" --- there is only one Cadillac, and that name has become synonymous with the top of the line car from the USA. There are plenty of other makers out there who have a better product, but if you say "Cadillac" people think of this grandiose machine because of it's heritage, no matter what the current state of that machine is. The same can be said of Gibson.

I bought 2 Les Pauls in my entire life and have no desire to buy any more Gibson product new or used. Their offerrings just bore the crap out of me. I don't want to play the historically accurate vintage vibe guitar my grandpa played!!! There have been just a few innovations in ergonomics, playability, materials and electronics since the 50's I hear.

I have meet some of their reps and dealers and have been treated nicely but I have also seen how different it can be for people inside. I was at NAMM with a Gibson overseas rep. It was a bit crowded but not packed but we were asked to leave and come back another time because it wasn't the rep's appointed time slot.

For the rumor mill.....my accountant (of all people!) says Gibson is in knee deep in debt and could tank at any minute.
