I just watched ca. jam with Deep Purple

The mix is great

Glenn Hughes is AMAZING

I was lucky enough to be in studio with about 40 other people a year ago when Glenn recorded live dvd Soulfully Live in LA--- check it out
 
I saw it a few times... Great show, even though there is this 'thing' on stage... It's kinda getting in the way of everything... It makes funny and disturbing noise. It's called Ritchie Blackmore :mad:
 
He made some decent riffs, but I hate him. I sometimes even like his playing, but I hate him as a person, and as a musician. He is not band material.
 
I have a soundboard recording of Glen Hughes and he includes Burn and Stormbringer in the set. He also states that next year he will be doing no more DP material in his set.

As much as I love Steve Morse is does not replace the original. There is no Deep Purple without Ritchie!!!
Think of the zillions of young guitarist who's first song on the guitar was Smoke on the Water!
Unless you've studies the full Deep Purple Anthology, you cannot understand what you speak.
He, Toni Iommi, Jimmy Page are the ultimate riff-masters!!!!! :cool:
 
Anyone heard the tapes of DP with Satriani? I believe the CD is called Flying in a Purple Dream and it is brilliant. Worth sourcing out.

It's really interesting to hear, but you can tell that Satch didn't fit in.

I am a huge Purple fan (no I not a tall purple giant)
Back in the day, I bought anything with there name on it. Vinyl, casette, CD you name it.
The more rare the better!

That's interesting cause the tape I have is brilliant. He plays it just like the original, something blackmore never really did. Also Satch's intro to lazy was great considering the Hammond part.
 
Don't get me wrong! I love it!
It is especially nice since they played songs that weren't the usual line up of set lists.
His playing is great! He's just not being himself.
What I've always loved about Ritchie is that everything felt like a live jam session.
His playing has a certain sloppiness and is constantly improvised.
I can't stand overly produced music, where every single note has to be perfect.
Where's the fun and experimentation, or the ability to just go with the moment!
I'll have to dig out those recordings. I haven't heard them in a while! :)
 
Blackmores parts on the DP records are perfect. There's a dvd available called "Come hell or high water" and on Highway Star he doesn't come out on stage until the guitar solo. He walks out throws a glass of water over a camera man does his solo and then walks off. Classic

That's what I'm talking about. Finally, MkII on DVD, and that idiot comes out and steals Jon's solo, not to mention that he throws a glass of water on a camera man. He is an amazing riff-writer, but not a person you could work with IMHO.

Listen. As one of the biggest bands in the world, especially in the 70's.
Every single band member is/was an ego maniac!!! Especially Gillan, and Blackmore. But you have to remember that being a rockstar back then was sort of a game (let's not forget the drugs!). Some of them have humbled over the years.
I'll agree that such antics don't fly in today's world, but it didn't matter then.
Look at Robert Plant!!! The guy is so narcissistic it's not even funny. But he's the front man of one of the most successful rock bands of all time.

I'll have to get the "Come hell or high water" DVD. I've seen it a few times but never bought it. The band was again starting to really fall apart at that time. That might be part of the reason for his behaviour. Not that I'm excusing it. :)
 
That DVD is in my opinion a waste of money and time. Especially if you've already seen it.
 
Well evidently Junior you have no idea about Blackmore and who he really is. I can tell you that he was probably the best guitar player and musician in those days, the most inovative and different from everyone tat was doing bluesy pentatonic solos and riffs. Without him in history there would be NO Malmsteen, therefore the guitarists we listen to today would probably not be the same either. Come Hell or High Water is an amazing DVD because it shows the tension between Blackmore and the band, which was actually the last performance he did with them I believe. For being pissed off as he was, they played amazingly together even with Blackmore's shinanigans. It is true that he might be sort of childish behaviour, but as a person he is a shy and is a type of a person where he feels strongly about his musical direction and does not like to be controled in certain ways. I read an article about him in some guitar magazione (cant remember which now) that was about 'what happened to the guitar Gods'. Some sh*t like that, and the author pissed me off so much complaining that he went from playing Rock to Renaissnace. Whatta F**K is wrong with that!!?!?!?!?! He has matured in a musical sense and has gone back to playing more classical music. It might not be for everyone, but also not every freakin guitarist can DO that and take a risk like that as well as he did for a living to do what HE wants, and not what MANAGMENT wants. So ppl need to shut up about something they dont know about, and just based one side of the story or one side of the double sided page!
 
You are right, and I'm sorry if you feel that I offended you or him in some way, but I still stand behind my previous statement ;)

It's just that Ritchie is the most underrated and most criticized guitar player of all, which is complete BS. Oh well.

Actually, Richie Sambora is the most underrated :D
