Brad Gillis was definitely underrated. He owned that technique where ya 'fwap' the whammy bar and make the trem springs shake to get the gurgle sound. In my neighborhood we called thhe technique "Gillis' Shakes"..seriously!
Yeah, Brad and my old guitar player (Raul Quesada; Sheila E. and Pete Escobar's cousin) from The Sun Kings (Beatle covers) are buds from all the way back in the day in the Bay Area. They've shared several bands together, and Raul still regards him highly!

Just thought I'd throw that at ya', Steve. :D

Has anyone mentioned the Crue - I caught them in Orlando last month and they rocked the house - even if Mick couldn't move around that well - I always loved Kickstart My Heart - classic 80s rock.

I saw the Crue at The Whiskey back in November '82. The shared a bill with The Stepmothers, and some other local L.A. band that escapes me at the moment...hell, I'm lucky to remember that much! :D

That was the last show before they headed to Japan with a fresh Elektra record deal; 'Too Fast For Love' had just been rereleased with the new label.

That was when L.A. gigs were still worth going to...

Not really hair metal, but was anybody else into Blackfoot? Bluesy southern rock, with an edge. They did a Freebird/Green Grass and High Tides type tune called Highway Song with an extended outro solo. The frontman/guitarist Rick Medlocke is in Skynyrd now. He's got....well.... had a real bluesy singing style, like he was playing guitar with his voice.

Hell yeah!

Marauder is one of my favourite albums ever.

Great voice, great songs, great guitar.

Buy it, steal it, download it but whatever just listen to it!

Wow, lots 'o great 80s bands here. Think we've covered all the lowlights :D

+1 for Colorcode - really dug that almum. Always figured I'd head more from Stevie Salas.

Big question is- of all those bands, who's playing stays with you now? Which solos do you still hear in your own stuff?

Though I wasn't the biggest Extreme fan, after Pornograffitti I was a huge Nuno fan. Still love hearing that guy play - even on his new stuff.

I became aware of Nuno when he was part of that tribute to Freddie Mercury and Queen shortly after freddie died in 1991. Bought Porno the next day and couldn't believe how good the tunes and playing was.

Then about a year ago, MTV was doing that show where they were trying to get the band back together and NUNO wouldn't play.

Nuno grew up in the next town over from where I live, his mom still lives there I think.

Maybe because Gary Shoron joined Van Halen?

I know they've done some reunion gigs somewhere- I think I remember reading that he just didn't want to be on the show b/c so many of the bands look like train wrecks.

C'mon now folks how about those legendary musicians from BulletBoys

This thread reminds me that I still have to display my autographed cassette copy of Extreme's first album. I saw them at a real sleaze hole on Long Island called Sundance...famous for the wonderful aroma of vomit and stale beer that permeated the nostrils of all who entered :D

As far as guitar players, I'd have to say my favorite and most influential heros of the decade would be (in no particular order):

EVH (THE reason I wanted to pick up the guitar)

Paul Gilbert (yikes)

Greg Howe (maybe the most underrated ever)

Nuno

Jason Becker

James Hetfield (nobody riffs better)

Angus Young

SRV

George Lynch

Reb Beach

Vai

Satch

Ralph Macchio (sorry, couldn't resist :D )

My fav bands of all time from the 80's were Van Halen, Dokken, White Lion, Metallica, Extreme, AC/DC and anything Steve Vai was doing at the time.

Although I personally prefer Kevin/James LaBrie's vocals I still really like listening to old school Dream Theater from Dominichi days.

Fortune in Lies, Killing Hand, Only a Matter of Time etc etc. Beautiful

The 80s was my general favourite period for music.

Master of Puppets is another 80s classic.

I hate this question, there is so much music that I'm forgetting about :(

ZZ Top - Gimme All Your Lovin'
AHHHHHH can't remember, too drunk!!!

I can't think of just one so I will do the top ten of my favorite soloists, bands, and songs from the 80's.

1. Def Leopard/ Photograph and Bringing On The Heartbreak
2. White Lion/ When The Children Cry and Wait
3. Anything by George Lynch
4. Winger/Headed For A Heartbreak
5. Queensryche/Suite Sister Mary
6. Cinderealla/Nobody's Fool
7. Yngwie Malmsteen/Heaven Tonight
8. Metallica/Master Of Puppets
9. Whitesnake/Is This Love and Still Of The Night
10. Van Halen/ Eruption and Hot For Teacher

I know most of these aren't shred fest solos I like that stuff too but man they are just so melodic and full of feeling the way music is supposed to be and I bet anybody that has heard them can still hum the solos today.LOL
