I suspect this may make me the odd man out, but my favorite EBMM neck finish is the "Ultra-light satin polyurethane finish" sprayed over the select maple necks from the first year (or two) of the Cutlass and StingRay line and the occasional Stealth Black models.

I have oil and wax finishes on flamed maple and have had full rosewood necks, but, for me, there seems to be the least amount of friction on the ultra-light satin polyurethane finish.

How about you?

Cost cutting measure I think. I mean if that's all it is, at least offer it as an upgrade.
Satin finishes are cheaper to apply than gloss, and require no buffing / polishing, so I doubt it is a cost cutting measure. Per the website right now:

"Neck Finish Mantis Green and Blood Moon - Gunstock oil and Wax; Stealth Black & Titan Gray are a matte finish"

I cannot say that I have really thought too much about neck finishes.

I like the gunstock oil and hand-rubbed special wax blend that Music Man applies to many instruments, as it is very smooth and pleasant to play, which is why EBMM necks have a great reputation.

The one thing that I do not particularly like is the abrupt boundary between such necks and glossy headstocks, as can be seen in this photo of the Axis 30th anniversary neck.

From a purely aesthetic perspective, a glossy neck does look nice to me.

Super common and no big deal, I do not play the head stock neck line so who cares
