I'm not trying to be a downer here, but I'm pretty sure I won't NEED a GC. Would it be nice to HAVE, sure! I just don't think all the sounds are necessary for a part-time musician. Let's face it, as long as the bass cuts through in a live mix, whether it sounds like a P-BASS or a Rickenbacher won't make a huge difference.
If you are a studio guy, then the different tones would definitely come in handy.
On one hand I hear what you are saying. You could potentially stick with one tone and it would be fine. But on the other hand, things might get a bit boring, so varying the tone keeps the listeners ear interested. Also, in a cover band, it helps to nail the tone of the original song easier.
This was part of my motivation to get a Big Al since it has a huge range of tones and this is helpful in a cover band.
